The Danish Medieval Laws the laws of Scania Zealand and Jutland

The Danish Medieval Laws the laws of Scania Zealand and Jutland

The Danish medieval laws: the laws of Scania Zealand and Jutland contains translations of the four most important medieval Danish laws written in the vernacular. The main texts are those of the Law of Scania the two laws of Zealand – Valdemar’s and Erik’s – and the Law of Jutland all of which date from the early thirteenth century. The Church Law of Scania and three short royal ordinances are also included. These provincial laws were first written down in the first half of the thirteenth century and were in force until 1683 when they were replaced by a national law. The laws preserved in over 100 separate manuscripts are the first extended texts in Danish and represent a first attempt to create a Danish legal language. The book starts with a brief but thorough introduction to the history of Denmark in the thirteenth century covering the country the political setting and the legal context in which the laws were written. There follows the translated text from each province preceded by a general introduction to each area and an introduction to the translation offering key contextual information and background on the process of translating the laws. An Old Danish-English glossary is also included along with an annotated glossary to support the reading of the translations. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of medieval Scandinavian legal history. | The Danish Medieval Laws the laws of Scania Zealand and Jutland

Volume 7 Tome III: Kierkegaard and His Danish Contemporaries - Literature Drama and Aesthetics

Volume 7 Tome III: Kierkegaard and His Danish Contemporaries - Literature Drama and Aesthetics

The period of Kierkegaard's life corresponds to Denmark's Golden Age which is conventionally used to refer to the period covering roughly the first half of the nineteenth century when Denmark's most important writers philosophers theologians poets actors and artists flourished. Kierkegaard was often in dialogue with his fellow Danes on key issues of the day. His authorship would be unthinkable without reference to the Danish State Church the Royal Theater the University of Copenhagen or the various Danish newspapers and journals such as The Corsair F¦drelandet and Kj¸benhavns flyvende Post which played an undeniable role in shaping his development. The present volume features articles that employ source-work research in order to explore the individual Danish sources of Kierkegaard's thought. The volume is divided into three tomes in order to cover the different fields of influence. Tome III is dedicated to the diverse Danish sources that fall under the rubrics Literature Drama and Aesthetics. The Golden Age is known as the period when Danish prose first established itself in genres such as the novel; moreover it was also an age when some of Denmark's most celebrated national poets flourished. Accordingly this tome contains articles on Kierkegaard's use of the great Danish poets and prose writers whose works are frequently quoted and alluded to throughout his writings. Kierkegaard regularly attended dramatic performances at Copenhagen's Royal Theater which was one of Europe's leading playhouses at the time. In this tome his appreciation for the art of Denmark's best-known actors and actresses is traced. Finally this tome features articles on the leading literary critics and aesthetic theorists of the Golden Age who served as foils for Kierkegaard's own ideas. | Volume 7 Tome III: Kierkegaard and His Danish Contemporaries - Literature Drama and Aesthetics

The Making of Place and People in the Danish Metropolis A Sociohistory of Copenhagen North West

The Making of Place and People in the Danish Metropolis A Sociohistory of Copenhagen North West

This book investigates the sociohistorical making of place and people in Copenhagen from around 1900 to the present day. Drawing inspiration from Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of social space and symbolic power and from Loïc Wacquant’s hypothesis of advanced marginality and territorial stigmatisation the book explores the genesis and development of the notorious neighbourhood of Copenhagen North West. As an extraordinary place the North West provides an illustrative case of Danish welfare and urban history that questions the epitome on inclusive Copenhagen. Through detailed empirical analysis the book spotlights three angles and entanglements of the social history of this area of Copenhagen: the production of socio-spatial constructions and authoritative categorisations of the neighbourhood especially by the state and the media; the local social pedagogical interventions and symbolic boundary drawings by welfare agencies in the neighbourhood; and the residents’ subjective experiences of place social divisions and (dis)honour. In this way The Making of Place and People in the Danish Metropolis analyses how social symbolical and spatial structures dynamically intertwine and contribute to the fashioning of divisions of inequality and marginality in the city over the course of some 125 years. It will appeal to scholars of sociology urban studies and urban history with interests in social welfare. | The Making of Place and People in the Danish Metropolis A Sociohistory of Copenhagen North West

Volume 18 Tome I: Kierkegaard Secondary Literature Catalan Chinese Czech Danish and Dutch

In recent years interest in the thought of Kierkegaard has grown dramatically and with it the body of secondary literature has expanded so quickly that it has become impossible for even the most conscientious scholar to keep pace. The problem of the explosion of secondary literature is made more acute by the fact that much of what is written about Kierkegaard appears in languages that most Kierkegaard scholars do not know. Kierkegaard has become a global phenomenon and new research traditions have emerged in different languages countries and regions. The present volume is dedicated to trying to help to resolve these two problems in Kierkegaard studies. Its purpose is first to provide book reviews of some of the leading monographic studies in the Kierkegaard secondary literature so as to assist the community of scholars to become familiar with the works that they have not read for themselves. The aim is thus to offer students and scholars of Kierkegaard a comprehensive survey of works that have played a more or less significant role in the research. Second the present volume also tries to make accessible many works in the Kierkegaard secondary literature that are written in different languages and thus to give a glimpse into various and lesser-known research traditions. The six tomes of the present volume present reviews of works written in Catalan Chinese Czech Danish Dutch English Finnish French Galician German Greek Hebrew Hungarian Italian Japanese Norwegian Polish Portuguese Romanian Russian Slovak Spanish and Swedish. | Volume 18 Tome I: Kierkegaard Secondary Literature Catalan Chinese Czech Danish and Dutch

EDHF The Complete Story

EDHF The Complete Story

The advances made in vascular biology in the last 25 years have considerably changed the perception that one could have of the endothelial cells. Once considered as a diffusion barrier preventing the access of the blood cells to the vascular matrix the endothelium is now recognized as playing a major role in the control of blood fluidity platelet aggregation and vascular tone but also in immunology inflammation angiogenesis and for serving as a metabolizing and an endocrine organ. from the prefaceCardiovascular diseases so prevalent in the Western world during the twentieth century could well become the scourge of the twenty-first century in emerging countries as well as the West. Endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or release of contracting and relaxing factors is often evoked to explain the initiation of the cardiovascular pathology or its development and perpetuation. Two decades ago when nitric oxide was demonstrated to mediate endothelium-dependent relaxations the vascular world seemed convinced that nitric oxide was the ultimate and sole explanation for such relaxations. However not everyone agreed. EDHF: The Complete Story is the work of two leading researchers who did not accept that simple conclusion but instead continued to search along with others for a deeper understanding of the ways in which endothelial cells communicate with the underlying smooth muscle to signal it to hyperpolarize. Now with most if not all of those ways uncovered the authors offer this summary as way of bringing closure to the quest. This monograph reports on the work of many researchers. It summarizes the significant recent discoveries concerning endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations which are likely to play a much more important role in cardiovascular physiology and pathology than was originally foreseenExtensively illustrated with original diagrams and schematics that su | EDHF The Complete Story
