Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Data communication standards are comprised of two components: The “protocol” and “Signal/data/port specifications for the devices involved”. The protocol describes the format of the message and the meaning of each part of the message. To connect any device to the bus an external device must be used as an interface which will put the message in a form which fulfills all the electrical specifications of the port. These specifications are called the “Standard”. The most famous such serial communication standard is the RS-232. In IT technology Communication can be serial or parallel. Serial communication is used for transmitting data over long distances. It is much cheaper to run the single core cable needed for serial communication over a long distance than the multicore cables that would be needed for parallel communication. It is the same in wireless communication: Serial communication needs one channel while parallel needs multichannel. Serial Communication can also be classified in many other ways for example synchronous and asynchronous; it can also be classified as simplex duplex and half duplex. Because of the wide spread of serial communication from home automation to sensor and controller networks there is a need for a very large number of serial communication standards and protocols. These have been developed over recent decades and range from the simple to the highly complicated. This large number of protocols was necessary to guarantee the optimum performance for the targeted applications. It is important for communication engineers to have enough knowledge to match the right protocol and standard with the right application. The main aim of this book is to provide the reader with that knowledgeThe book also provides the reader with detailed information about:- Serial Communication- Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART)- Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (USART - Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) - eSPI- Universal Serial Bus (USB)- Wi-Fi- WiMax- InsteonThe details of each technology including specification operation security related matters and many other topics are covered. The book allocates three chapters to the main communication standards. These chapters cover everything related to the most famous standard RS-232 and all its variants. Other protocols such as: I2C CAN ZigBee Z-Wave Bluetooth and others are the subject of the authors separate book “Microcontroller and Smart Home Networks”. | Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Game Audio Mixing Insights to Improve Your Mixing Performance

Computer Systems Architecture

Computer Systems Architecture

Computer Systems Architecture provides IT professionals and students with the necessary understanding of computer hardware. It addresses the ongoing issues related to computer hardware and discusses the solutions supplied by the industry. The book describes trends in computing solutions that led to the current available infrastructures tracing the initial need for computers to recent concepts such as the Internet of Things. It covers computers’ data representation explains how computer architecture and its underlying meaning changed over the years and examines the implementations and performance enhancements of the central processing unit (CPU). It then discusses the organization hierarchy and performance considerations of computer memory as applied by the operating system and illustrates how cache memory significantly improves performance. The author proceeds to explore the bus system algorithms for ensuring data integrity input and output (I/O) components methods for performing I/O various aspects relevant to software engineering and nonvolatile storage devices such as hard drives and technologies for enhancing performance and reliability. He also describes virtualization and cloud computing and the emergence of software-based systems’ architectures. Accessible to software engineers and developers as well as students in IT disciplines this book enhances readers’ understanding of the hardware infrastructure used in software engineering projects. It enables readers to better optimize system usage by focusing on the principles used in hardware systems design and the methods for enhancing performance.

Unsustainable Transport and Transition in China

Unsustainable Transport and Transition in China

This book discusses various transport sustainability issues from the perspective of developing countries exploring key issues problems and potential solutions for improving transport sustainability in China. It first reviews the current transport sustainability baselines in the three key dimensions of environmental economic and social sustainability via an international comparison encompassing both developed and developing countries in different world regions. Then with a time frame up to 2030 the study groups 100 major Chinese cities according to their baseline conditions projected population and economic growth and common sustainability challenges in passenger transport. A systematic attempt is made to discuss the characteristics strengths and weaknesses of various emerging sustainable transport strategies including the metro systems bus rapid transit light rail bicycles (and e-bicycles) electric vehicles and walking. Based on the different city clusters identified the study then explores the opportunities and constraints of introducing a range of emerging sustainable transport strategies through both statistical analysis and detailed fieldwork. Future directions and challenges are identified based on official documents onsite observations and interviews with local people. The study concludes with thoughts on sustainable transport in smart cities the importance of governance local participation internal and external city movements and towards a holistic sustainable transport plan. Unsustainable Transport and Transition in China will be of great interest to scholars interested in carbon emissions climate change environmental policy planning road safety sustainability transportation and urban studies and is relevant to China and other developing countries.

Communication Theory

Communication Theory

Communication is the most complex and elevating achievement of human beings. Most people spend up to 70 percent of our waking hours engaged in some form of communication. Listening and responding to the messages of others occupies much of this time; the rest is taken up by talking reading and writing. An additional consideration is the rich assortment of nonverbal cues humans share which also constitute a form of communication. All together the stream of verbal and nonverbal information that bombards our senses is composed of as many as 2 000 distinguishable units of interaction in a single day. The kinds of interaction change constantly: morning greetings cereal labels bus signs charts traffic lights hate stares graffiti coffee shop chat gestures laughter and head nods: The themes are endless. All of this constitutes subject matter for the study of communication. The book seeks to acquaint students with a basic understanding of the process of human communication. The breadth and scope of subject matter is adaptable to a number of approaches to the first course in communication whether theoretical practical contemporary or traditional in orientation. The framework of this book introduces five topics of central interest to the field of communication theory. Part I describes the process of communication as it unfolds in face-to-face environments. Part II considers the symbolic significance of interpersonal behavior. Part III examines the organization of communicative acts and shows why human interactions tend to become more synchronous over time. Part IV explores the complex problem of understanding other people demonstrating the tendency of understanding to become intersubjective. Part V accounts for the communicative significance of several basic human environments-communities organizations media institutions and culture.

Investigating Human Error Incidents Accidents and Complex Systems Second Edition

Investigating Human Error Incidents Accidents and Complex Systems Second Edition

In this book the author applies contemporary error theory to the needs of investigators and of anyone attempting to understand why someone made a critical error how that error led to an incident or accident and how to prevent such errors in the future. Students and investigators of human error will gain an appreciation of the literature on error with numerous references to both scientific research and investigative reports in a wide variety of applications from airplane accidents to bus accidents to bonfire disasters. Based on the author's extensive experience as an accident investigator and instructor of both aircraft accident investigation techniques and human factors psychology it reviews recent human factors literature summarizes major transportation accidents and shows how to investigate the types of errors that typically occur in high risk industries. It presents a model of human error causation influenced largely by James Reason and Neville Moray and relates it to error investigations with step-by-step guidelines for data collection and analysis that investigators can readily apply as needed. This second edition of Investigating Human Error has been brought up to date throughout with pertinent recent accidents and safety literature integrated. It features new material on fatigue distraction (eg mobile phone and texting) and medication use. It also now explores the topics of corporate culture safety culture and safety management systems. Additionally the second edition considers the effects of the reduction in the number of major accidents on investigation quality the consequences of social changes on transportation safety (such as drinking and driving cell phone use etc) the contemporary role of accident investigation and the effects of the prosecution of those involved in accidents. | Investigating Human Error Incidents Accidents and Complex Systems Second Edition
