Combinatorial Nullstellensatz With Applications to Graph Colouring

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz With Applications to Graph Colouring

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is a novel theorem in algebra introduced by Noga Alon to tackle combinatorial problems in diverse areas of mathematics. This book focuses on the applications of this theorem to graph colouring. A key step in the applications of Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is to show that the coefficient of a certain monomial in the expansion of a polynomial is nonzero. The major part of the book concentrates on three methods for calculating the coefficients: Alon-Tarsi orientation: The task is to show that a graph has an orientation with given maximum out-degree and for which the number of even Eulerian sub-digraphs is different from the number of odd Eulerian sub-digraphs. In particular this method is used to show that a graph whose edge set decomposes into a Hamilton cycle and vertex-disjoint triangles is 3-choosable and that every planar graph has a matching whose deletion results in a 4-choosable graph. Interpolation formula for the coefficient: This method is in particular used to show that toroidal grids of even order are 3-choosable r-edge colourable r-regular planar graphs are r-edge choosable and complete graphs of order p+1 where p is a prime are p-edge choosable. Coefficients as the permanents of matrices: This method is in particular used in the study of the list version of vertex-edge weighting and to show that every graph is (2 3)-choosable. It is suited as a reference book for a graduate course in mathematics. | Combinatorial Nullstellensatz With Applications to Graph Colouring

Foucault Art and Radical Theology The Mystery of Things

Foucault Art and Radical Theology The Mystery of Things

Michel Foucault wrote prolifically on many topics including art religion and politics. He also eloquently articulated how power structures are formed and how they also might assist resistance and emancipation. This book uses the hermeneutical lens of Foucault’s writings on art to examine the performative material and political aspects of contemporary theology. The borderland between philosophy theology and art is explored through Foucault’s analyses of artists such as Diego Velázquez Édouard Manet René Magritte Paul Rebeyrolle and Gerard Fromanger. Here special focus is placed on performativity and materiality—or what the book terms the mystery of things. At successive junctures the book discovers a postrepresentational critique of transcendence; an enigmatic material sacramentality; playful theopolitical accounts of the transformative force of stupidity and nonsense; and political imagery in motion enabling theological interpretations of contemporary collectives such as Pussy Riot and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. In conversation with contemporary thinkers including Catherine Keller Louise-Marie Chauvet John Caputo Daniel Barber Mark C. Taylor Jeffrey W. Robbins and Mattias Martinson the book outlines this source of inspiration for contemporary radical theology. This is a book with a fresh and original take on Foucault art and theology. As such it will have great appeal to scholars and academics in theology religion and the arts the philosophy of religion political philosophy and aesthetics. | Foucault Art and Radical Theology The Mystery of Things

Disney Theme Parks and America’s National Narratives Mirror Mirror for Us All

Disney Theme Parks and America’s National Narratives Mirror Mirror for Us All

Disney Theme Parks and America’s National Narratives takes a public history approach to situating the physical spaces of the Disney brand within memory and identity studies. For over 65 years Disney’s theme parks have been important locations for the formation and negotiation of the collective memory of the American narrative. Disney’s success as one of America’s most prolific storytellers its rise as a symbol of America itself and its creation of theme parks that immerse visitors in three-dimensional versions of certain American values and historic myths have both echoed and shaped the way the American people see themselves. Like all versions of the American narrative Disney’s vision serves to reassure us affirm our shared values and unite a diverse group of people under a distinctly American identity—or at least it did. The book shows how the status Disney obtained led the public to use them both as touchstones of identity and as spaces to influence the American identity writ large. This volume also examines the following: • how Disney’s original cartoons and live-action entertainment offerings drew from American folk history and ideals • how their work during World War II cemented them as an American symbol at home and abroad • how the materialization of the American themes already espoused by the brand at their theme parks created a place where collective memory lives • how legitimization by presidents and other national figures gave the theme parks standing no other entertainment space has • how Disney has changed alongside the American people and continues to do so today. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of history media cultural studies American studies and tourism. | Disney Theme Parks and America’s National Narratives Mirror Mirror for Us All

The Tragic Odes of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead Mystery Dances in the Magic Theater

The Tragic Odes of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead Mystery Dances in the Magic Theater

The Tragic Odes of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead is a multifaceted study of tragedy in the group’s live performances showing how Garcia brought about catharsis through dance by leading songs of grief mortality and ironic fate in a collective theatrical context. This musical literary and historical analysis of thirty-five songs with tragic dimensions performed by Garcia in concert with the Grateful Dead illustrates the syncretic approach and acute editorial ear he applied in adapting songs of Robert Hunter Bob Dylan and folk tradition. Tragically ironic situations in which Garcia found himself when performing these songs are revealed including those related to his opiate addiction and final decline. This book examines Garcia’s musical craftsmanship and the Grateful Dead’s collective art in terms of the mystery-rites of ancient Greece Friedrich Nietzsche’s Dionysus 20th century American music rooted in New Orleans Hermann Hesse’s Magic Theater and the Greek Theatre at Berkeley offering a clear prospect on an often misunderstood phenomenon. Featuring interdisciplinary analysis close attention to musical and poetic strategies and historical and critical contexts this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of Popular Music Musicology Cultural Studies and American Studies as well as to the Grateful Dead’s avid listeners. | The Tragic Odes of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead Mystery Dances in the Magic Theater

The Finnish Education Mystery Historical and sociological essays on schooling in Finland

The Finnish Education Mystery Historical and sociological essays on schooling in Finland

Finnish education has been a focus of global interest since its first PISA success in 2001. After years of superficial celebration astonishment and educational tourism the focus has recently shifted to what is possibly the most interesting element of this Finnish success story: that Finnish schools have been effectively applying methods that go against the flow of global education policy with no testing no inspection no hard evaluation no detailed national curriculum no accountability and no hard competition. From a historical and sociological perspective the Finnish case is not merely a linear success story but is part of a controversial and paradoxical struggle towards Utopia: towards egalitarian schooling. Bringing together a collection of essays by Hannu Simola and his colleagues this book analyses the key dimensions of schooling in Finland to provide a critical analytical and uncompromising picture of the Finnish education system. Going beyond the story of success the book reveals the complexities of educational change but also identifies opportunities and alternatives for smart political action in complex and trans-national societies. Including a selection of key chapters on Finnish education policy and governance teacher education and classroom cultures the book will be of interest to researchers academics and postgraduate students in comparative education teacher education educational policy and educational reform. | The Finnish Education Mystery Historical and sociological essays on schooling in Finland

The Mystery of Contemporary Iran

The Mystery of Contemporary Iran

The mystery of how an Islamic dictatorship came to power remains more than thirty years after the Islamic Republic's inception in Iran. The precise nature of a regime that calls itself both a republic and Islamic but is neither is little understood. The ayatollahs' unpopularity may have reached unprecedented heights but their power seems more secure. Such paradoxes weigh heavily and judgments diverge. While public opinion wonders how an archaic theocratic regime could survive so long some explain it in terms of Iran's continued modernization and the clergy's ability to reconcile itself with politics. Understanding the modernization process propelled by the Constitutional Revolution is difficult and raises questions. How and why could ideological Islam continue to dominate Iranian society since the late 1970s? How did it gain power and influence and overcome the reforms molded by the Constitutional Revolution? Mahnaz Shirali analyzes twentieth-century Iranian history to understand the Shiite clergy's role in a modernized country's social and political organization. She explains what enabled the clergy to take over prevailing political forces and gain control of the state. Studying Iran's history for the past one hundred years reveals the force of a religious conservatism opposing political modernity repelling any attempt at democracy by Iranians thanks to its constant metamorphoses. Shirali studies the curse of the Shiite clergy on political modernity. It is a convincing in-depth criticism of the ideological Islam imposed on Iran. | The Mystery of Contemporary Iran
