Drone Futures UAS in Landscape and Urban Design

Drone Futures explores new paradigms in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in landscape and urban design. UAS or drones can be deployed with direct application to the built environment; this book explores the myriad of contemporary and future possibilities of the design medium its aesthetic mapping agency AI mobility and contribution to smart cities. Drones present innovative possibilities operating in a ‘hover space’ between human scales of landscape observation and light aircraft providing a unique resolution of space. This book shows how UAS can be utilised to provide new perspectives on spatial layout landscape and urban conditions data capture for construction monitoring and simulation of design proposals. Author Paul Cureton examines both the philosophical use of these tools and practical steps for implementation by designers. Illustrated in full colour throughout Drone Futures discusses UAS and their connectivity to other design technologies and processes including mapping and photogrammetry AR/VR drone AI and drones for construction and fabrication new mobilities smart cities and city information models (CIMs). It is specifically geared towards professionals seeking to understand UAS applications and future development and students seeking an understanding of the role of drones and airspace in the built environment and its powerful geographic imaginary. Terrorism and the US Drone Attacks in Pakistan Killing First

Terrorism and the US Drone Attacks in Pakistan Killing First

This book analyses the US drone attacks against terrorists in Pakistan to assess whether the ‘pre-emptive’ use of combat drones to kill terrorists is ever legally justified. Exploring the doctrinal discourse of pre-emption vis-à-vis the US drone attacks against terrorists in Pakistan the book shows that the debate surrounding this discourse encapsulates crucial tensions between the permission and limits of the right of self-defence. Drawing from the long history of God-given and man-made laws of war this book employs positivism as a legal frame to explore and explain the doctrine of pre-emption and analyses the doctrine of the state’s rights to self-defence as it stretches into pre-emptive or preventive use of force. The book investigates why the US chose the recourse to pre-emption through the use of combat drones in the ‘war on terror’ and whether there is a potential future for the pre-emption of terrorism through combat drones. The author argues that the policy to ‘kill first’ is easy to adopt; however any disregard for the web of legal requirements surrounding the policy has the potential to undercut the legal claims of an armed act. The book enables the framing and analysis of such controversies in legal terms as opposed to a choice between law and policy. An examination of the legal dilemma concerning drone warfare this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of international relations Asian politics South Asian studies and security studies in particular global security law new wars and emerging technologies of warfare. | Terrorism and the US Drone Attacks in Pakistan Killing First

Knowledge Management in Public Health

Knowledge Management in Public Health

Close collaboration across agencies and international borders is mandatory for public health officials. A powerful tool for sharing knowledge knowledge management (KM) can help public health professionals quickly collaborate and disseminate knowledge for solving public health issues worldwide. The latest initiatives for reforming healthcare have put the spotlight on the need for maximizing resources. In addition to providing a platform for sharing knowledge KM can help healthcare professionals do more with less. One tool two problems solved. Yet the sharing of knowledge and KM continues to be a major challenge in the public health field. Knowledge Management in Public Health provides a general introduction to KM and social networking in the public health arena. The book begins with coverage of basic principles components and methodologies as well as trends and key issues in public health. It includes ten case studies illustrating applications of KM and social networking in public health. The chapters are written by leading individuals from organizations involved in applying KM in public health worldwide. The editors and chapter authors explore the many elements of KM delineating how and why to start such an initiative. They provide specific examples of the development and value-added benefits of KM in a variety of public health environments. Tough or quick decision making has always benefitted enormously from knowledge based on the maximum amount of pertinent information available at the time—this has not changed. What is new in the present public health environment is the need to do this more often with fewer personnel available and increased expectations relative to the services expected by the public. Better use of information under a KM system is well suited to serve that purpose. This book explores the many ways to use KM to anticipate potential health issues and quickly resolve key incidents when they occur.

Unmatched 50 Years of Supercomputing

Unmatched 50 Years of Supercomputing

Unmatched: 50 Years of Supercomputing: A Personal Journey Accompanying the Evolution of a Powerful Tool The rapid and extraordinary progress of supercomputing over the past half-century is a powerful demonstration of our relentless drive to understand and shape the world around us. In this book David Barkai offers a unique and compelling account of this remarkable technological journey drawing from his own rich experiences working at the forefront of high-performance computing (HPC). This book is a journey delineated as five decade-long ‘epochs’ defined by the systems’ architectural themes: vector processors multi-processors microprocessors clusters and accelerators and cloud computing. The final part examines key issues of HPC and discusses where it might be headed. A central goal of this book is to show how computing power has been applied and more importantly how it has impacted and benefitted society. To this end the use of HPC is illustrated in a range of industries and applications from weather and climate modeling to engineering and life sciences. As such this book appeals to both students and general readers with an interest in HPC as well as industry professionals looking to revolutionize their practice. From the Foreword: “David Barkai's career has spanned five decades during which he has had the rare opportunity to be part of some of the most significant developments in the field of supercomputing. His personal and professional insights combined with his deep knowledge and passion for the subject matter make this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the evolution of HPC and its impact on our lives. ” -Horst Simon Director Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) Lab | Unmatched 50 Years of Supercomputing

The United States and Great Power Responsibility in International Society Drones Rendition and Invasion

This book evaluates American foreign policy actions from the perspective of great power responsibility with three case studies: Operation Iraqi Freedom American drone strikes in Pakistan and the post- 9/11 practice of extraordinary rendition. This book argues that the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 American drone attacks in Pakistan and the practice of extraordinary rendition are the examples of irresponsible actions undertaken by the U. S. acting as a great power in international society. Focusing on a major theoretical approach of International Relations the English School this book considers the responsibilities of great powers in international society. It points to three obligations of great powers: to act according to the norm of legality to act according to the norm of legitimacy and to adhere to the principles of prudence. The author applies the criteria of legality legitimacy and prudence to analyse the three foreign policy endeavours of the U. S. and developing a normative framework clarifies the implications for future U. S. foreign policy. This book will be of strong interest to students and scholars of international relations international relations theory American politics foreign policy studies international law South Asian studies and Middle Eastern studies. | The United States and Great Power Responsibility in International Society Drones Rendition and Invasion
