Going beyond Parochialism and Fragmentation in the Study of International Relations

Going beyond Parochialism and Fragmentation in the Study of International Relations

International Relations (IR) as a discipline is a western dominated enterprise. This has led to calls to broaden the scope and vision of the discipline by embracing a wider range of histories experiences and theoretical perspectives – particularly those outside the Anglo-American core of the West. The ongoing ‘broadening IR projects’ – be they ‘non-Western IR’ ‘post-Western IR’ or ‘Global IR’ – are making contributions in this regard. However some careful thinking is needed here in that these attempts could also lead to a national or regional ‘inwardness’ that works to reproduce the very parochialism that is being challenged. The main intellectual concerns of this edited volume are problematising Western parochialism in IR; giving theoretical and epistemological substance to pluralism in the field of IR based on both Western and non-Western thoughts and experiences; and working out ways to move the discipline of IR one step closer to a dialogic community. A key issue that cuts across all contributions in the volume is to go beyond both parochialism and fragmentation in international studies. In order to address the manifold and contested implications of pluralism in in the field of IR the volume draws on the wealth of experience and research of prominent and emerging IR scholars whose contributions make up the work with a mixture of theoretical analysis and case studies. This book will appeal to scholars and students interested in Global IR and promoting dialogue in a pluralist IR. | Going beyond Parochialism and Fragmentation in the Study of International Relations

Peace and Security in Indo-Pacific Asia IR Perspectives in Context

Peace and Security in Indo-Pacific Asia IR Perspectives in Context

Peace and Security in Indo-Pacific Asia is for the informed the interested and the engaged. Sorpong Peou brings together the skills of the pedagogue with the knowledge of the scholar. Dr. David Dewitt University Professor Emeritus Senior Scholar York University Toronto Canada. Peou’s excellent book provides both the lay reader and the specialist with six important theoretical frameworks which should provide the basis for better appreciation of what a security community in Indo-Pacific Asia means in our world today. There are very few scholars who understand the region like Peou. Dr. W. Andy Knight Professor of Political Science the University of Alberta Canada. Sorpong Peou’s extraordinary breadth of knowledge of both International Relations theory and the key trends in Indo-Pacific Asia shines through in this authoritative analysis. Dr. Richard Stubbs Professor of Political Science McMaster University Canada. A pedagogical approach of the textbook that is appreciated is how the author respectfully engages with the theories of IR and is not pushing an agenda of denouncing some theories and trying to persuade the reader of others. We live in such polarizing times that it is truly refreshing to read scholarly work that avoids sensationalistic attacks on theories that have been debated for decades. Each theory in this manuscript is explored on its own terms and the reader is encouraged to figure out where they stand on these enduring debates in the context of Indo-Pacific security. The approach will lead to compelling classroom discussions of the theories and the politics of the region. This book is a must-read for any student or observer of security trends in the region. Withdrawal from Immanuel Kant and International Relations The Global Unlimited

Withdrawal from Immanuel Kant and International Relations The Global Unlimited

This book shows how the flawed orientation forming Immanuel Kant’s philosophical project is the same from which the discipline of International Relations (IR) becomes possible and appears necessary. Tracing how core problems in Kant’s thought are inescapably reproduced in IR this book demonstrates that constructive critique of IR is impossible through mere challenge to its Kantian traditions. It argues that confrontation with the Kantian character of IR demands fundamental withdrawal from their shared aims. Investigating the global limits inherent to epistemological and ontological commitments of Kant’s writings and IR this interdisciplinary study interrogates the racism sexism coloniality white male privilege and anthropocentricism of both as sites from which such withdrawal may be initiated. Following queer and feminist examinations of how Kant and IR discipline a joint orientation through sex gender and sexuality it indicates how withdrawal is possible. And considering how Anishinaabe legal tradition opens freedom beyond the restricting horizons of Kant and IR this book contemplates withdrawal from both as leading to a global unlimited. An essential text for advanced undergraduate and graduate studies this book will also be of strong interest to those studying the thinking and writings of Kant neo- and post-Kantian scholarship and IR theory. | Withdrawal from Immanuel Kant and International Relations The Global Unlimited

The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education Big Data Organizational Learning and Student Success

The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education Big Data Organizational Learning and Student Success

Co-published with and In this era of “Big Data ” institutions of higher education are challenged to make the most of the information they have to improve student learning outcomes close equity gaps keep costs down and address the economic needs of the communities they serve at the local regional and national levels. This book helps readers understand and respond to this “analytics revolution ” examining the evolving dynamics of the institutional research (IR) function and the many audiences that institutional researchers need to serve. Internally there is a growing need among senior leaders administrators faculty advisors and staff for decision analytics that help craft better resource strategies and bring greater efficiencies and return-on-investment for students and families. Externally state legislators the federal government and philanthropies demand more forecasting and more evidence than ever before. These demands require new and creative responses as they are added to previous demands rather than replacing them nor do they come with additional resources to produce the analysis to make data into actionable improvements. Thus the IR function must become that of teacher ensuring that data and analyses are accurate timely accessible and compelling whether produced by an IR office or some other source. Despite formidable challenges IR functions have begun to leverage big data and unlock the power of predictive tools and techniques contributing to improved student outcomes. | The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education Big Data Organizational Learning and Student Success

The International Politics of Fashion Being Fab in a Dangerous World

The International Politics of Fashion Being Fab in a Dangerous World

This book seeks to address and fill a puzzling omission in contemporary critical IR scholarship. Following on from the aesthetic turn in IR critical and ‘postmodern’ IR has produced an impressive array of studies into movies literature music and art and the way these media produce mediate and represent international politics. By contrast the proponents of the aesthetic turn have overlooked fashion as a source of knowledge about global politics. Yet stories about the political role of fashion abound in the news media. Margaret Thatcher used dress to define her political image and more recently the fascination with Michelle Obama Carla Bruni and other women in similar positions and the discussions about the appropriateness of their wardrobes regularly makes the news. In Sudan a female writer and activist successfully challenged the government over her right to wear trousers in public and in Europe the debate on women’s headscarves has politicised a garment item and turned it into a symbol of fundamentalism and oppression. In response the contributors to this book investigate the politics of fashion from a variety of perspectives addressing theoretical as well as empirical issues establishing the critical study of fashion and its protagonists as a central contribution to the aesthetic turn in international politics. The politics of fashion go beyond these examples of the uses and abuses of textiles and fabrics for political purposes extending into its very ‘grammar’ and vocabulary. This book will be a unique contribution to the field and will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations critical IR theory and popular culture and world politics. | The International Politics of Fashion Being Fab in a Dangerous World

Vibrational Spectroscopy for Tissue Analysis

Vibrational Spectroscopy for Tissue Analysis

A rapidly growing field vibrational spectroscopy has found applications in industries including pharmaceutical manufacture food and drug safety and process monitoring on production lines. In particular interest in clinical spectroscopy is rising rapidly as researchers recognize the potential of the vibrational spectroscopic techniques—Infrared (IR) and Raman Spectroscopy—as noninvasive tissue diagnosis tools. However the details of the characteristic peak frequencies and their relationship to specific functional groups present in the biological tissues have not been fully understood. Vibrational Spectroscopy for Tissue Analysis introduces IR and Raman Spectroscopy to those scientists who are either using these spectroscopic techniques to address clinical problems or planning to use spectroscopy to analyze clinical tissues and understand their chemical composition. By compiling the interpretations and understandings of the spectral peaks of the biological molecules in one place this book aids in the understanding of IR and Raman Spectroscopy and what these techniques can offer both in early diagnosis of the disease and monitoring of the progression of the disease. Despite the tremendous advances in the field of spectroscopy where new applications are emerging at the pace of development there are still areas of research that are crying for further exploration. This book bridges the gap between the spectroscopic research and medical applications.
