The Woman and the Dynamo Isabel Paterson and the Idea of America

The Woman and the Dynamo Isabel Paterson and the Idea of America

Novelist columnist cultural critic political theorist- Isabel Paterson was one of the most extraordinary personalities of the 1930s renowned for her incisive wit and her unique interpretation of the American experience. The Woman and the Dynamo is the first biography of a woman who has long been a source of rumor and legend. From interviews private papers and her millions of published words Stephen Cox weaves a narrative that brings Paterson vividly to life. A radical individualist in both theory and practice Paterson spent her early life on the Western frontier lavished two years on formal education set a record for high-altitude flight became a journalist by accident and made herself a fearless chronicler and conscience of New York literary life. At the same time she made a permanent contribution to American political thought. Paterson identified the fundamental issues at stake in the crises of the twentieth century and responded with an original theory of history and political economy. In her view the individual mind is the dynamo of history working through the long circuit of institutions that maintain and enhance individual liberty; and America is the place where the advanced forms of those institutions were invented and are currently undergoing their severest trial. While other intellectuals derided the American ideal of progress and called for the restraint or abolition of the capitalist system Paterson demanded a scrupulous application of the engineering principles on which American civilization had been built. The Woman and the Dynamo provides one of the few broad and detailed accounts of the origins of the American political Right emphasizing the special role that women and imaginative writers played in its creation and posing new questions about what it means to be left or right liberal or conservative in America. This will be compelling reading for those interested in twentieth century intellectual history literature and politics. | The Woman and the Dynamo Isabel Paterson and the Idea of America

God of the Machine

God of the Machine

The God of the Machine presents an original theory of history and a bold defense of individualism as the source of moral and political progress. When it was published in 1943 Isabel Paterson's work provided fresh intellectual support for the endangered American belief in individual rights limited government and economic freedom. The crisis of today's collectivized nations would not have surprised Paterson; in The God of the Machine she had explored the reasons for collectivism's failure. Her book placed her in the vanguard of the free-enterprise movement now sweeping the world. Paterson sees the individual creative mind as the dynamo of history and respect for the individual's God-given rights as the precondition for the enormous release of energy that produced the modern world. She sees capitalist institutions as the machinery through which human energy works and government as a device properly used merely to cut off power to activities that threaten personal liberty. Paterson applies her general theory to particular issues in contemporary life such as education . social welfare and the causes of economic distress. She severely criticizes all but minimal application of government including governmental interventions that most people have long taken for granted. The God of the Machine offers a challenging perspective on the continuing worldwide debate about the nature of freedom the uses of power and the prospects of human betterment. Stephen Cox's substantial introduction to The God of the Machine is a comprehensive and enlightening account of Paterson's colorful life and work. He describes The God of the Machine as not just theory but rhapsody satire diatribe poetic narrative. Paterson's work continues to be relevant because it exposes the moral and practical failures of collectivism failures that are now almost universally acknowledged but are still far from universally understood. The book will be essential to students of American history political theory and literature.

Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II

Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II

This book in two volumes contains an annotated English translation of the História da Ethiópia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary priest Pedro Páez (Pêro Pais in Portuguese) 1564-1622 who worked in the Portuguese padroado missions first in India and then in Ethiopia long thought to be the kingdom of the legendary Prester John. His history of Ethiopia was written in Portuguese in the last ten years of his life and survives in only two manuscripts. The translation by Christopher J. Tribe is based on the new critical edition of the Portuguese text by Isabel Boavida Hervé Pennec and Manuel João Ramos which was published in Lisbon in 2008. They are also the editors of this English version. The History of Ethiopia is an essential source for several areas of study - from the history of the Catholic missions in that country and the relations between the European religious orders to the history of art and religions; from the history of geographical exploration to the ideological contextualization of the Ethiopian kingdom; from material culture to Abyssinian political and territorial administration; and from an analysis of local circumstances to changes in human ecology in the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean. It is a repository of empirical knowledge on the political geography religion customs flora and fauna of Ethiopia. It combines travel narrative with a historico-ethnographic monograph and is a chronicle of the activities of Jesuit missionaries in their Ethiopian mission. It also reworks a wide variety of documents including the first translations into a European language of a number of Ethiopian literary texts from royal chronicles to hagiographies. It complements other early accounts of Ethiopia by Ludovico de Varthema Francisco Alvares Castanhoso Bermudez Arnold von Harff Manoel de Almeida Bahrey Alessandro Zorzi Jerónimo Lobo and Václav Prutky all published by The Hakluyt Society. | Pedro Páez's History of Ethiopia 1622 / Volume II
