Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

What do seat belts life jackets and anti-jack knife technology have in common? They were all the subjects of campaigns run by the British Safety Council since its inception in 1957. James Tye its charismatic founder and leader for nearly 40 years created the British Safety Council to bring about a transformation in how Great Britain viewed safety and health. In 1957 hundreds if not thousands of workers were killed in accidents and James marshalled every conceivable technique to save lives including PR stunts training lobbying for better laws and crucially what he called ‘propaganda’ in the form of posters and other communication tools. In 2014 a long-lost collection of posters papers and letters were found gathering dust in a warehouse. The British Safety Council wanting to mark its 60-year history and its role in reducing deaths at work decided to preserve the collection and commissioned historian Mike Esbester to trace the history of health and safety in Britain from the late 1960s through the posters and photographs of the time. Transformative Propaganda: Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council offers a fascinating and vivid insight into the social and political realities of the 1960s 1970s and 1980s through a wealth of historical documents press cuttings correspondence photographs and posters. It offers a truly extraordinary window onto the evolution of health and safety within the UK and richly deserves a place on the bookshelf of every safety professional. | Transformative Propaganda Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council

Handbook of Regression Modeling in People Analytics With Examples in R and Python

Handbook of Regression Modeling in People Analytics With Examples in R and Python

Despite the recent rapid growth in machine learning and predictive analytics many of the statistical questions that are faced by researchers and practitioners still involve explaining why something is happening. Regression analysis is the best ‘swiss army knife’ we have for answering these kinds of questions. This book is a learning resource on inferential statistics and regression analysis. It teaches how to do a wide range of statistical analyses in both R and in Python ranging from simple hypothesis testing to advanced multivariate modelling. Although it is primarily focused on examples related to the analysis of people and talent the methods easily transfer to any discipline. The book hits a ‘sweet spot’ where there is just enough mathematical theory to support a strong understanding of the methods but with a step-by-step guide and easily reproducible examples and code so that the methods can be put into practice immediately. This makes the book accessible to a wide readership from public and private sector analysts and practitioners to students and researchers. Key Features: 16 accompanying datasets across a wide range of contexts (e. g. academic corporate sports marketing) Clear step-by-step instructions on executing the analyses Clear guidance on how to interpret results Primary instruction in R but added sections for Python coders Discussion exercises and data exercises for each of the main chapters Final chapter of practice material and datasets ideal for class homework or project work. | Handbook of Regression Modeling in People Analytics With Examples in R and Python

Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology Rolling Bearing Analysis Fifth Edition

Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology Rolling Bearing Analysis Fifth Edition

For the last four decades Tedric Harris' Rolling Bearing Analysis has been the bible for engineers involved in rolling bearing technology. Why do so many students and practicing engineers rely on this book? The answer is simple: because of its complete coverage from low- to high-speed applications and full derivations of the underlying mathematics from a leader in the field. The fifth edition of this classic reference is divided conveniently into two volumes each focused on a specialized area of bearing technology. This option allows you to select the coverage that is best suited to your needs. The second of two books Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology steps up the level to more dynamic and complex loading more extreme operating conditions and higher-speed applications. The authors examine several topics that are unique to the book including mathematical relationships for internal load distribution under conditions of high speed combined radial axial and moment loading as well as the effects of raceway and roller profiling. They also delve into the mathematical development of rolling element-raceway lubricant film thickness and contact friction the stress-life method for calculating bearing fatigue endurance and the effects of shaft and supporting structure flexure on bearing loading and deflection. Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology is the perfect aid for analyzing complex performance and fatigue-life phenomena in advanced applications. | Advanced Concepts of Bearing Technology Rolling Bearing Analysis Fifth Edition

The Geographical Guide of Ptolemy of Alexandria An Analysis

The Geographical Guide of Ptolemy of Alexandria An Analysis

This volume offers a detailed study of Ptolemy of Alexandria’s Geographical Guide whose eight books contain a wealth of geographical information unavailable elsewhere and represent the culmination of the Greco-Roman discipline of geography. Written near the middle of the second century ad the Geographical Guide is the most anomalous of the surviving works of ancient geographical scholarship but offers a vivid record of the expansion of geographical knowledge in antiquity. Roller examines this peculiar text which offers unique data about explorations in the far reaches of the inhabited world from Thoule and Hibernia in the northwest to Kattigara in the southeast and from Serike in northeastern Asia southwest into central Africa. He positions the Guide within the tradition of ancient geography and gives close attention to the reason why Ptolemy wrote the guide and how it contributes to the genre of geographical scholarship. There is also an emphasis on the topographic and ethnic material within the Guide that is new or unique especially explorations in sub-Saharan Africa and knowledge of the world beyond India. Because the Guide was written over half a century after the previous extant geographical work—the first books of Pliny’s Natural History—the book also assesses how knowledge of geography changed during this period. This work is an essential text for students and scholars of ancient geography and is also of interest to anyone working on the cultural history of the Roman Empire during this period. | The Geographical Guide of Ptolemy of Alexandria An Analysis
