Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Tens of thousands of Italian civilians perished in the Allied bombing raids of World War II. More of them died after the Armistice of September 1943 than before when the air attacks were intended to induce Italy’s surrender. Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 addresses this seeming paradox by examining the views of Allied political and military leaders Allied air crews and Italians on the ground. It tells the stories of a little-known diplomat (Myron Charles Taylor) military strategist (Solly Zuckerman) resistance fighter (Aldo Quaranta) and peace activist (Vera Brittain) – architects and opponents of the bombing strategies. It describes the fate of ordinary civilians drawing on a wealth of local and digital archival sources memoir accounts novels and films including Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and John Huston’s The Battle of San Pietro. The book will be of interest to readers concerned about the ethical legal and human dimensions of bombing and its effects on civilians to students of military strategy and Italian history and to World War II buffs. They will benefit from a people-focused history that draws on a range of eclectic and rarely used sources in English and Italian. Supportive Conversations on Facebook Timelines Discourse Topic Management

The emergence of social networking sites like Facebook and people’s engagement with one another through them is a relatively under-researched area for discourse analysis. The content of the book revolves around Discourse Topic Management which is under the theme of Discourse Analysis. It is written to extend the very limited literature in the area of Discourse Topic especially for the discourse which takes place on social networking sites. This study discusses the characteristics of topical actions employed by English language teachers and their Facebook Friends in managing supportive conversations which take place on Timelines. In addition to employing new strategies enabled by the particular features of the site the teachers and their Friends also creatively adapt the strategies used in face-to-face conversations to manage their online conversations thus contributing to the emergence of unique characteristics of discourse topic management in the context of social networking sites. The book brings together the existing frameworks of Discourse Topic Management which are previously applied in the context of face-to-face conversations and synthesizes the frameworks for a more comprehensive model into examining the conversations which take place on Facebook Timelines. The novelty of this book lies in its synthesized framework the recontextualization of the framework for online conversations and the theoretical extension based on the data analysis presented in each chapter. Since people’s engagement with social networking sites is an emerging behaviour this timely book provides insights into the phenomenon and also proposes a comprehensive analytical framework for other researchers interested in similar contexts. | Supportive Conversations on Facebook Timelines Discourse Topic Management

Patriotism Partition and the Persecuted Social Biography of Victims of Partition

Patriotism Partition and the Persecuted Social Biography of Victims of Partition

This book explores the theme of continuous wreaking of brutal persecution of a Hindu family on the one hand and the uncompromising efforts of Muslim friends and neighbours to protect this family on the other. It is set against the resultant and barbaric forces let loose after the propagation of the two nation theory and the ultimate partition of India in 1947. Based on the soical biography of a Hindu family that stayed back in East Pakistan it traces their journey how they became 'other' in the country of their birth and faced persecution. This being branded the other led to part of the family migrating to Inida away from their natal roots. The 1965 India-Pakistan war further brought prolonged separation and sufferings for these half-families living on both sides of the borders. Subjecting one to encounter helplessness uncertainty and poverty in India and the other to state sponsored apathy coercion arrests and physical tortures. The vicious atmosphere of violent communal aggression though did not stop their Muslim friends from protecting them. When the Muslim friend was killed by the religious fanatics in the newly liberated Bangladesh the left behind member of the Hindu family realized that it was time to leave their motherland for India where they died with the desire to go back to their motherland buried along with them. Despite prolonged violence and tragic separation thereafter numerous memories of the self-sacrificing efforts of the compatriots served as recollection in collective living in the Indian subcontinent. | Patriotism Partition and the Persecuted Social Biography of Victims of Partition
