The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

Taking as his point of departure the authors the audience and the texts of Victorian writings on sex in general and of Victorian pornography in particular Steven Marcus offers a startling and revolutionary perspective on the underside of Victorian culture. The subjects dealt with in The Other Victorians are not only those to have been shocking in the Victorian period. The way these subjects were regarded-and the way our notions of the Victorians continue to change as the efforts of contemporary scholarship restore them to their full historical dimensions-are matters today of some surprise and wonder. Making use for the first time of the extensive collection of Victoriana at the Kinsey Institute for Sex Research Marcus first examines the writings of Dr. William Acton who may be said to represent the official views of sexuality held by Victorian society and of Henry Spencer Ashbee the first and most important bibliographer-scholar of pornography. He then turns to the most significant work of its kind from the period the eleven-volume anonymous autobiography My Secret Life. There follows an analysis of four pornographic Victorian novels-an analysis that throws an oblique but fascinating light on the classics of Victorian literature-and a review of the odd flood of Victorian publications devoted to flagellation. The book concludes with a chapter propounding a general theory of pornography as a sociological phenomenon. With the publication of The Other Victorians understanding of this period took a giant stride forward. Most of the writers and writings discussed by Marcus belong to Victorian sub-literature rather than to literature proper; in this way the work remains connected to a consideration of the exotic sub-literature. A brilliantly written book in its own right this work transformed the study of the Victorian period as did no other. | The Other Victorians A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-nineteenth-century England

A King Translated The Writings of King James VI & I and their Interpretation in the Low Countries 1593–1603

A King Translated The Writings of King James VI & I and their Interpretation in the Low Countries 1593–1603

King James is well known as the most prolific writer of all the Stuart monarchs publishing works on numerous topics and issues. These works were widely read not only in Scotland and England but also on the Continent where they appeared in several translations. In this book Dr Stilma looks both at the domestic and international context to James's writings using as a case study a set of Dutch translations which includes his religious meditations his epic poem The Battle of Lepanto his treatise on witchcraft Daemonologie and his manual on kingship Basilikon Doron. The book provides an examination of James's writings within their original Scottish context particularly their political implications and their role in his management of his religio-political reputation both at home and abroad. The second half of each chapter is concerned with contemporary interpretations of these works by James's readers. The Dutch translations are presented as a case study of an ultra-protestant and anti-Spanish reading from which James emerges as a potential leader of protestant Europe; a reputation he initially courted then distanced himself from after his accession to the English throne in 1603. In so doing this book greatly adds to our appreciation of James as an author providing an exploration of his works as politically expedient statements which were sometimes ambiguous enough to allow diverging - and occasionally unwelcome - interpretations. It is one of the few studies of James to offer a sustained critical reading of these texts together with an exploration of the national and international context in which they were published and read. As such this book contributes to the understanding not only of James's works as political tools but also of the preoccupations of publishers and translators and the interpretative spaces in the works they were making available to an international audience. | A King Translated The Writings of King James VI & I and their Interpretation in the Low Countries 1593–1603

The Rushdie Affair The Novel the Ayatollah and the West

The Rushdie Affair The Novel the Ayatollah and the West

The publication in 1988 of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses triggered a furor that pitted much of the Islamic world against the West over issues of blasphemy and freedom of expression. The controversy soon took on the aspect of a confrontation of civilizations provoking powerful emotions on a global level. It involved censorship protests riots a break in diplomatic relations culminating in the notorious Iranian edict calling for the death of the novelist. In The Rushdie Affair Daniel Pipes explains why the publication of The Satanic Verses became a cataclysmic event with far-reaching political and social consequences. Pipes looks at the Rushdie affair in both its political and cultural aspects and shows in considerable detail what the fundamentalists perceived as so offensive in The Satanic Verses as against what Rushdie's novel actually said. Pipes explains how the book created a new crisis between Iran and the West at the time-disrupting international diplomacy billions of dollars in trade and prospects for the release of Western hostages in Lebanon. Pipes maps out the long-term implications of the crisis. If the Ayatollah so easily intimidated the West can others do the same? Can millions of fundamentalist Muslims now living in the United States and Europe possibly be assimilated into a culture so alien to them? Insightful and brilliantly written this volume provides a full understanding of one of the most significant events in recent years. Koenraad Elst's postscript reviews the enduring impact of the Rushdie affair. | The Rushdie Affair The Novel the Ayatollah and the West
