In Conquest and Redemption Gregg J. Rickman explains how the Nazis stole the possessions of their Jewish victims and obtained the cooperation of institutions across Europe in these crimes of convenience. He also describes how those institutions are being brought to justice sixty years later for their retention of their ill-gotten gains. A partial explanation can be found in the Nazis' creation of a virtual religion of German nationalism and homogeneity that delegitimized Jews as a people and as individuals. This belief system was expressed through a complex structure of religious rules practices and institutions. While Nazi ideology was the guiding principle how that ideology was formed and how it was applied is important to understand if one is to fully grasp the Holocaust. Rickman painstakingly describes the structural composition and motivation for the plundering of Jewish assets. The Holocaust will always remain a memory of unequalled pain and suffering but as Rickman shows the return of stolen goods to their survivors is a partial victory for the long aggrieved. Lithium Niobate Nanophotonics

Photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology holds great potential for breaking through the bottlenecks in current photonic and optoelectronic networks. Recently a revolution has been witnessed in the field of lithium niobate (LN) photonics. Over the past decade nanoscale LN waveguides with a propagation loss of ~0. 01 dB and a radius of curvature on the level of ~100 μm have been demonstrated. The revolution mainly benefits from two technological advancements the maturity of lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) technology and the innovation of nanofabrication approaches of high-quality LNOI photonic structures. Using low-loss waveguides and high-quality-factor (high-Q) microresonators produced on the LNOI platform as building blocks various integrated photonic devices have been demonstrated with unprecedented performances. The breakthroughs have reshaped the landscape of the LN industry. This is the first monograph on LN nanophotonics enabled by the LNOI platform. It comprehensively reviews the development of fabrication technology investigations on nonlinear optical processes and demonstrations of electro-optical devices as well as applications in quantum light sources spectroscopy sensing and microwave-to-optical wave conversion. Before the introduction of automatic machines and automation industrial manufacturing of machines and their parts for the key industries were made though manually operated machines. Circulant matrices have been around for a long time and have been extensively used in many scientific areas. This book studies the properties of the eigenvalues for various types of circulant matrices such as the usual circulant the reverse circulant and the k-circulant when the dimension of the matrices grow and the entries are random. In particular the behavior of the spectral distribution of the spectral radius and of the appropriate point processes are developed systematically using the method of moments and the various powerful normal approximation results. This behavior varies according as the entries are independent are from a linear process and are light- or heavy-tailed. Arup Bose obtained his B. Stat. M. Stat. and Ph. D. degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute. He has been on its faculty at the Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit Kolkata India since 1991. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of all three national science academies of India. He is a recipient of the S. S. Bhatnagar Prize and the C. R. Rao Award. He is the author of three books: Patterned Random Matrices Large Covariance and Autocovariance Matrices (with Monika Bhattacharjee) and U-Statistics M_m-Estimators and Resampling (with Snigdhansu Chatterjee). Koushik Saha obtained a B. Sc. in Mathematics from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandiara Belur and an M. Sc. in Mathematics from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He obtained his Ph. D. degree from the Indian Statistical Institute under the supervision of Arup Bose. His thesis on circulant matrices received high praise from the reviewers.
