Active and Programmable Networks for Adaptive Architectures and Services

Active and Programmable Networks for Adaptive Architectures and Services

Most conventional networks are passive with only basic traffic monitoring management routing and congestion control. At best they can be called reactive. Deploying new functions and integrating new standards into these architectures is difficult due to the rigid embedding of software and hardware into the network components. Active and Programmable Networks for Adaptive Architectures and Services introduces a new generation of network technologies and architecture that allows the creation customization and management of new services and applications deployed dynamically into network nodes. Following a brief introduction and historical overview the author outlines the architecture of active and programmable networks discusses the enabling technologies for network programmability in detail and introduces several paradigms and prototypes. He then explores packet scheduling management routing and security and examines active wireless and mobile networks. The final chapter presents several real-world examples of currently deployed active and programmable networks. Several tables present information on different schemes and architectures allowing easy comparison among a range of networking options. Placing the new paradigm in contrast with concepts such as TCP/IP and OSI Active and Programmable Networks for Adaptive Architectures and Services makes it easy to see how these new technologies can help you build more flexible and adaptive networks that can seamlessly integrate new functions.

Edible Food Packaging with Natural Hydrocolloids and Active Agents

Edible Food Packaging with Natural Hydrocolloids and Active Agents

The aim of this book is to show the potential of natural hydrocolloids and active agents to develop sustainable edible packaging materials for food preservation. For this the current and future sources of natural hydrocolloids have been reviewed along with their extraction methods impact on health and ability to form different packaging such as film casing coating mat pad etc. Similarly natural active compounds were evaluated carefully considering their sources extraction methods regulatory status and compatibility with edible packaging. The book emphasizes the recent developments in methods strategies and technologies employed to enhance the performance of antimicrobial antioxidant and bioactive packaging. The basic testing methods used to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of edible packaging in model media and food were discussed and carefully selected example active edible packaging applications for different food categories were provided with critical details such as the thin balance between effectiveness of packaging and sensory properties of food. As such it helps in understanding necessary parameters in designing an effective active edible packaging that is applicable to the target food category. Moreover readers are primed for the first time on how to develop a fully natural antimicrobial antioxidant or bioactive edible food packaging. This book is different from most of the similar books' avail as it provides neither methodologies about classical active packaging based on chemicals and fossil polymeric films nor is it a thorough collection of different food packaging applications. It is also not a book that concentrates on physicochemical characterization methods and engineering aspects of packaging. Instead this is a book that provides systematic knowledge about key methods of evaluating natural resources agro-industrial wastes and by-products for development of edible packaging and concentrates on concepts strategies technologies and applications of active edible packaging based solely on natural components. It is designed to share both positive and negative experiences in an emerging field that is expected to play a central role in improving food safety and quality human health and environmentally friendly practices. | Edible Food Packaging with Natural Hydrocolloids and Active Agents

Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

The fitness boom of the last two decades has led to many people incorporating exercise into their lifestyles through activities such as jogging and aerobics. However whilst many physical and psychological health benefits have been documented far too few people actually take part in enough exercise to glean significant improvements and this is much more a problem for women than men. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman explores one reason many women offer for their lack of involvement in sport and exercise - that they are not the 'sporty' type. Precilla Y. L. Choi argues that the 'sporty' type is masculine and to determine how this notion might affect women's self-perceptions she critically examines the experiences of women athletes bodybuilders recreational exercisers and girls' physical education. What emerges is the importance of visible differences between women and men in terms of muscularity strength and agility in order to maintain the gender order. Thus if a girl or woman wishes to play the masculine game of sport she must do so in conformity with a number of patriarchal rules which ensure she is first and foremost recognised as a heterosexual feminine being. Contributing to a psychology of the physically active woman by examining women's experiences from critical feminist and gendered perspectives Femininity and the Physically Active Woman will be of great interest to students researchers practitioners and teachers from a range of disciplines. Precilla Y. L. Choi is the British Association for the Advancement of Science's Joseph Lister Lecturer for 2000. She has co-edited with Paula Nicolson Female Sexuality (Prentice Hall).

Active Landscape Photography Diverse Practices

Active Landscape Photography Diverse Practices

Diverse Practices the third book in the Active Landscape Photography series presents a set of unique photographic examples for site-specific investigations of landscape places. Contributed by authors across academia practice and photography each chapter serves as a rigorous discussion about photographic methods for the landscape and their underlying concepts. Chapters also serve as unique case studies about specific projects places and landscape issues. Project sites include the Miller Garden Olana XX Miller Prize and the Philando Castile Peace Garden. Landscape places discussed include the archeological landscapes of North Peru watery littoral zones the remote White Pass in Alaska Sau Paulo and New York City’s Chinatown. Photographic image-making approaches include the use of lidar repeat photography collage mapping remote image capture portraiture image mining of internet sources visual impact assessment cameraless photography transect walking and interviewing. These diverse practices demonstrate how photography when utilized through a set of specific critical methods becomes a rich process for investigating the landscape. Exploring this concept in relationship to specific contemporary sties and landscape issues reveals the intricacy and subtlety that exists when photography is used actively. Practitioners academics students and researchers will be inspired by the underlying concepts of these examples and come away with a better understanding about how to create their own rigorous photographic practices. | Active Landscape Photography Diverse Practices

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method brings together Carl Jung’s active imagination and Robert Desoille’s rêve éveillé dirigé/directed waking dream method (RED). It studies the historical development of these approaches in Central Europe in the first half of the 20th century and explores their theoretical similarities and differences proposing an integrated framework of clinical practice. The book aims to study the wider European context of the 1900s which influenced the development of both Jung’s and Desoille’s methods. This work compares the spatial metaphors of interiority used by both Jung and Desoille to describe the traditional concept of inner psychic space in the waking dreams of Jung’s active imagination and Desoille’s RED. It also attempts a broader theoretical comparison between the procedural aspects of both RED and active imagination by identifying commonalities and divergences between the two approaches. This book is a unique contribution to analytical psychology and will be of great interest for academics researchers and post-graduate students interested in the use of imagination and mental imagery in analysis psychotherapy and counselling. The book’s historical focus will be of particular relevance to Jungian and Desoillian scholars since it is the first of its kind to trace the connections between the two schools and it gives a detailed account of Desoille’s early life and his first written works. This book was a Gradiva Award nominee for 2021. | Jung's Technique of Active Imagination and Desoille's Directed Waking Dream Method Bridging the Divide

C. G. Jung and the Dead Visions Active Imagination and the Unconscious Terrain

C. G. Jung and the Dead: Visions Active Imagination and the Unconscious Terrain offers an in-depth look at Jung’s encounters with the dead moving beyond a symbolic understanding to consider these figures a literal presence in the psyche.
