Influence and Resistance in Post-Independence Egyptian Architecture

Predicated on historical contextualization theoretical integration and global conceptualization Edward Said’s analytical method of contrapuntal reading and the spatial discourse analysis posited by C. Greig Crysler are lucidly assimilated to generate insights into various voices within the architectural discourse in Egypt. The Early History of Economics in the United States The Influence of the German Historical School of Economics on Teaching and Theory

The Early History of Economics in the United States The Influence of the German Historical School of Economics on Teaching and Theory

Since the latter half of the 20th century the economics departments of American universities were internationally renowned for providing competitive and advanced levels of education. However from the 1870s up until the beginning of WWI German universities held international supremacy when it came to the quality of teaching the enrollment of foreign students and scholarly publications. This book examines the role of the German Historical School of Economics (GHSE) in the development of the discipline of economics in the US during this period. The chapters explain that prior to the influence of the GHSE political economy was in a dismal state in the US both as a profession and an academic discipline. As a result many Americans elected to go to Germany in pursuit of an advanced education in political economy having been inspired by the unmatched international reputations of theorists of the GHSE. After they returned home these German-trained Americans challenged the dominant status of classical orthodoxy and revolutionized the discipline of economics in the US by importing the ideas methods and approaches of the GHSE. In doing so they established the first dedicated political economy departments graduate programs and chairs at American universities and colleges. Although the precise magnitude and value of the influence of the GHSE is impossible to quantify there is no doubt that Americans are deeply indebted to this school of thought for its contributions to the early development of the discipline of economics in the US. The chapters also examine what has been lost since: the current mainstream in economics has eliminated many of the features that were once so important to the discipline that it has effectively limited contemporary economics to a small fraction of the complex organism defined by the German Historical School. This situation has facilitated the poverty of the leading economic school of thought as well as the discipline of economics in general. This book represents a significant contribution to the literature on the history of economic thought and economic education in the US. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of economics political science sociology and the philosophy of economics. | The Early History of Economics in the United States The Influence of the German Historical School of Economics on Teaching and Theory

Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Using a Role Theory lens this book investigates Tamil diaspora mass movements and interest groups as marginalised forces of domestic foreign policy influence. Until now Role Theory has not considered diaspora mass movements as collective action actors nor looked at how marginalised diasporas influence elite foreign policy decision-making. Matthew K. Godwin employs a comparative micro-level decision-making narrative that looks incisively at decisions faced by the British and Canadian governments in 2009 and 2013 towards the Sri Lankan civil war and its aftermath. Through qualitative elite-level interviews and content analysis of other primary source data Godwin convincingly argues that when diaspora interest group elites are leveraging the power of mass movements in concert with credible partisan advocates they can influence role contestation. However international institutional constraints on role behaviour may stymie their preferred role performance especially if states are indispensable to the institutions their behaviour may unravel. Ultimately Godwin concludes that some states can't behave badly even when they want to. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of lnternational Relations Foreign Policy Analysis Comparative Politics Migration Studies and to non-government organisations who seek to influence governments. | Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Unconscious Networks Philosophy Psychoanalysis and Artificial Intelligence

Unconscious Networks Philosophy Psychoanalysis and Artificial Intelligence

This book develops an original theoretical framework for understanding human-technology relations. The author’s approach which he calls technoanalysis analyzes artificial intelligence based on Freudian psychoanalysis biosemiotics and Latour’s actor-network theory. How can we communicate with AI to determine shared values and objectives? And what ultimately do we want from machines? These are crucial questions in our world where the influence of AI-based technologies is rapidly growing. Unconscious dynamics influence AI and digital technology and understanding them is essential to better controlling AI systems. This book’s unique methodology— which combines psychoanalysis biosemiotics and actor-network theory—reveals a radical reformulation of the problem of the human mind. Technoanalysis views the mind as a hybrid network of humans and nonhuman actants in constant interaction with one another. The author argues that human unconscious dynamics influence and shape technology just as technology influences and shapes human unconscious dynamics. He proceeds to show how this conception of the relationship between the unconscious and technology can be applied to social robotics and AI. Unconscious Networks will appeal to scholars and advanced students interested in philosophy of technology philosophy of artificial intelligence psychoanalysis and science and technology studies. | Unconscious Networks Philosophy Psychoanalysis and Artificial Intelligence

Families in Business The Next Generation of Family Evolution

Families in Business The Next Generation of Family Evolution

This book offers a ‘contemporary’ understanding of families in business and serves as a springboard for ongoing evolution of families their composition transformations and activities. The first chapter in this volume highlights the different approaches to family and concludes that identifying and understanding the entity ‘family in business’ is the cornerstone to understanding behaviours of family businesses. The concept of ‘family in business’ as a socially constructed entity allows for not only a broader scope of the concept to include individuals who share a faith (chapter 2) but also multi- generational families and chosen families. Narratives or stories are means for families in business to mark the boundary of the family in business (chapter 3) because not all members of the family are necessarily members of the family in business. Families and their businesses influence each other (chapter 4) and engender the family influence on the firm (‘familiness’) and firm influence of the family (‘enterpriseness’). The last two chapters are dedicated to transgenerational family businesses with a focus on learning between generations—chapter 5 highlights the importance of unlearning (to learn new knowledge and different ways of conducting business) and the final chapter focuses on what knowledge is actually transferred relative to initial plans. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Entrepreneurship & Regional Development. | Families in Business The Next Generation of Family Evolution
