City States In The Global Economy Industrial Restructuring In Hong Kong And Singapore

City States In The Global Economy Industrial Restructuring In Hong Kong And Singapore

This is the first serious comparative study of two dynamic Asian city-states that are emerging as key regional?indeed global?cities. Providing both historical comparisons and analyses of contemporary issues the authors consider the patterns strategies and consequences of industrial restructuring. They build their analysis around the interrelationships of four institutional spheres: the global economy the state the financial system and the labor market. This leads to a unique emphasis on the distinctiveness of individual NICs as opposed to much of the literature in the field which tends to group these Asian dragons together as a single undifferentiated case. The book addresses three basic sets of questions tied to industrial restructuring in Hong Kong and Singapore: First what are the basic patterns of restructuring in the two economies? What corporate strategies have manufacturers used to restructure their operations? Are Hong Kong and Singapore diverging or utilizing the same restructuring strategies? Second how should the process of restructuring in the two economies and the concomitant similarities or divergencies be explained? Third what are the consequences of the restructuring process for the two economies? How are these processes shaped by the shared histories of Hong Kong and Singapore as colonial port cities their current status as NICs ?squeezed? between industrialized western societies and the Third World and their role as important regional cities in East and Southeast Asia? | City States In The Global Economy Industrial Restructuring In Hong Kong And Singapore

Social Theory and the Political Imaginary Practice Critique and History

Social Theory and the Political Imaginary Practice Critique and History

Social Theory and the Political Imaginary: Practice Critique and History is an innovative work of synthesis critique and analysis. It presages a social theory perspective that recognizes the constitutive significance of the political imaginary in modernity. Social theory’s current dilemmas are explored through a series of interlinked assessments of recent substantial strands specifically Luc Boltanski’s pragmatism and the wider ‘practical turn ’ the perspectives of multiple modernities and global modernity the outlook of social and political imaginaries and critical social theory. The political imaginary’s reconfigurations are evident in the tensions of global modernity and original social theory interpretations are advanced of landmark instances of twenty-first-century social contestation: the Hong Kong protests conditioned by threats to civil freedoms and a lack of self-determination the radical democratic practices of anti-austerity movements contesting capitalist globalization’s injustices and the inverted cosmopolitanism of the 2005 French Riots challenging the oppression and inequalities experienced by immigrant communities and marginalized youth. These incisive applications of social theory and complementary conceptual innovations illuminate the vicissitudes of social struggles political forms and theoretical perspectives. Similarly reflection on the political imaginary is found to enable a necessary rethinking of the interrelationship of practice critique and history. | Social Theory and the Political Imaginary Practice Critique and History

Methodological Advancements in Social Impacts of Tourism Research

Methodological Advancements in Social Impacts of Tourism Research

This book offers a fresh perspective of on some of the cutting-edge methodological approaches being used among scholars conducting work on social impacts of tourism. These works are international in focus spanning across Europe (e. g. Austria Croatia Portugal Serbia Slovenia Spain and Turkey) and Asia (e. g. Hong Kong Iran Japan Malaysia Singapore Thailand and Turkey). The authors employ qualitative quantitative and mixed methods designs and some of the notable focus areas include comparative studies of residents’ perspectives of tourism (i. e. involving impacts of various forms of tourism and community children’s perceptions of tourism); statistical techniques such as multigroup invariance analysis and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis; and the employment of novel measurement tools such as the implicit association test involving residents’ implicit stereotypes of visitors from multiple countries and the utilization of the human-scale development to identify residents’ needs and satisfiers. This edited volume will most assuredly advance the methodological focus of research on social impacts of tourism moving forward. This book will be of great interest to all upper-level students and researchers in tourism planning and related fields. The chapters in this volume were originally published as a special issue of Journal of Sustainable Tourism. | Methodological Advancements in Social Impacts of Tourism Research

Media and Suicide International Perspectives on Research Theory and Policy

Media and Suicide International Perspectives on Research Theory and Policy

Despite suicide prevention programs therapy and pharmacological treatments the suicide rate is either increasing or remaining high around the world. Media and Suicide holds traditional and emergent media accountable for influencing an individual’s decision to commit suicide. Global experts present research historical analysis theoretical disputes (including discussion on the Werther and Papageno effects) and policy regarding the media’s impact on suicide. They answer questions about the effects of different types of media and storytelling show how the impact of social media can be diminished discuss internet bullying mass-shootings and mass-suicides show the effects of recovery stories and much more. The editors also present examples of suicide policy in the United States Switzerland the United Kingdom Ireland and Hong Kong on how to best communicate reporting guidelines to decrease the copycat effect especially in less developed nations where most of the world’s nearly one million suicides occur each year. Although there is much work to be done to prevent media-influenced suicide this innovative volume will contribute a large piece to this complex puzzle. | Media and Suicide International Perspectives on Research Theory and Policy

IP Laws and Regimes in Major Asian Economies Combing through Thousand Threads of IP to Peace in Asia

This book systematically studies the structural characteristics of IP laws and regimes of major Asian economies including (but not always) China Hong Kong India Indonesia Japan Korea Malaysia Singapore Taiwan and Thailand. It explores and crystallizes some worthy Asian models which could further help the development of international IP laws. This book begins with an overview of Asian modern history and IP laws. It discusses the three basic IP laws in Asia which are patent law trademark law and copyright law. It looks at the pre-established damages for copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting. The book also deals with problems with trade secret and its over-protection. It compares IP laws and four industries in India and China and examines what role have IP laws played in the development in those industries and how India and China can learn from each other. Finally it examines one medium and one small-sized Asian economy on its respective struggle (Taiwan’s efforts to build a coherent IP exhaustion regime) and a success story (how Singapore has utilized IP to secure its position in global value chains). This book is a useful reference for law students scholars practitioners IP professionals who are interested in knowing Asia Asian IP laws and industries their struggles and finding ways to better global IP laws.
