The Routledge International Handbook of Shared Parenting and Best Interest of the Child

The Routledge International Handbook of Shared Parenting and Best Interest of the Child

This multidisciplinary volume offers an essential comprehensive study of perspectives on the scope and application of the best interests of the child and focuses mainly on its application in relation to child custody. With expert contributions from psychological sociological and legal perspectives it offers scientific analysis and debate on whether it should be the primary consideration in deciding child custody cases in cases of divorce or separation or whether it should be one of several primary considerations. It explores complex dilemmas inherent in shared parenting and whether the advantages it offers children are sufficient when compared to attributing custody to one parent and limiting visitation rights of the other. Offering a comprehensive analysis of this complex topic chapters provide detailed insight into the current state of research in this area as well as expert guidelines aimed at resolving the controversies when parents agree or disagree over their children’s living arrangements. Cutting-edge topics explored include: transnational shared parenting; alternative dispute resolution; breastfeeding parents; religious disputes between parents and the psychological social and economic factors that affect shared parenting. The Routledge International Handbook of Shared Parenting and Best Interest of the Child will be essential reading for scholars and graduate students in law psychology sociology and economics interested in shared parenting and family law.

Private Correspondence between Sir Harry Parkes and Edmund Hammond 1869-1872

Private Correspondence between Sir Harry Parkes and Edmund Hammond 1869-1872

This is a new series which publishes for the first time the correspondences of Sir Harry Smith Parkes (1828 – 1885) the second British Minister of Japan and includes the complete transcriptions of his ‘private’ letters to and from Edmund Hammond permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs who was the decision maker about major issues in the British relation to Asia and his successors at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Chronologically arranged the series covers all such letters during his 18 years in Japan and with the first volume for Bakumatsu the end of the Shogunate era. Parkes arrived in Japan in 1865 as the second Minister Plenipotentiary and Consul General of the United Kingdom to Japan and stayed at the position till 1883. He was one of the few who observed Japan during its turbulent period of Westernization and supported the reformers to establish the new government. His efforts and services alongside his secretaries such as Ernest Satow George Aston and A. B. Freeman-Mitford saw the modernization of Japan starting under the strong influence of Britain. Despite his leading role between Japan and the West in early years his days and activities in Japan are less known and not widely studied due to the lack of primary source information as his experiences remained unpublished unlike his predecessor Rutherford Alcock who authored The Capital of the Tycoon or Ernest Satow’s A Diplomat in Japan. Apart from two volumes in Parkes’ biography by F. V. Dickins no contemporary sources of his life are available. This series of private correspondence of Sir Harry Parkes will fill such a gap and will be of interest for scholars and student of Japan and Anglo-Japanese history. All correspondence included in the volumes are fully annotated. Also included are his letters with other members of the ministry and documents such as conference minutes which will provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject. | Private Correspondence between Sir Harry Parkes and Edmund Hammond 1869-1872

Fanaticism and the History of Philosophy

Fanaticism and the History of Philosophy

Voltaire called fanaticism the monster that pretends to be the child of religion. Philosophers politicians and cultural critics have decried fanaticism and attempted to define the distinctive qualities of the fanatic whom Winston Churchill described as someone who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject. Yet despite fanaticism’s role in the long history of social discord human conflict and political violence it remains a relatively neglected topic in the history of philosophy. In this outstanding inquiry into the philosophical history of fanaticism a team of international contributors examine the topic from antiquity to the present day. Organized into four sections topics covered include: Fanaticism in ancient Greek Indian and Chinese philosophy; Fanaticism and superstition from Hobbes to Hume including chapters on Locke and Montesquieu Shaftesbury and Hutcheson; Kant Germaine de Stael Hegel Nietzsche William James and Jorge Portilla on fanaticism; Fanaticism and terrorism; and extremism and gender including the philosophy and morality of the manosphere; Closed-mindedness and political and epistemological fanaticism. Spanning themes from superstition enthusiasm and misanthropy to the emotions purity and the need for certainty Fanaticism and the History of Philosophy is a landmark volume for anyone researching and teaching the history of philosophy particularly ethics and moral philosophy. It is also a valuable resource for those studying fanaticism in related fields such as religion the history of political thought sociology and the history of ideas.
