A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

The burgeoning scholarship on Western health films stands in stark contrast to the vacuum in the historical conceptualization of Eastern European films. This book develops a nonlinear historical model that revises their unique role in the inception of national cinematography and establishing supranational health security. Readers witness the revelation of an unknown history concerning how the health films produced in Eastern European countries not only adopted Western patterns of propaganda but actively participated in its formation especially with regard to those considered “others”: Women and the populations of the periphery. The authors elaborate on the long “echo” of the discursive practices introduced by health films within public health propaganda as well as the attempts to negate and deconstruct such practices by rebellious filmmakers. A wide range of methods including the analysis of the sociological biographies of filmmakers the historical reconstruction of public campaigns against diseases and an investigation into the production of health films contextualizes these films along a multifaceted continuum stretching between the adaptation of global patterns and the cultivation of national authenticities. The book is aimed at those who study the history of film the history of public health Central and Eastern European countries and global history. | A Critical History of Health Films in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond

Digital Transformation and the Economics of Banking Economic Institutional and Social Dimensions

Digital Transformation and the Economics of Banking Economic Institutional and Social Dimensions

The book provides deep insight into the processes of digital transformation of banking according to economic institutional and social dimensions. Together with the transformation of incumbent banks the processes result in changes in the scope of existing banking services. Moreover new entities (FinTech firms) partner with incumbent banks and reshape the banking sector and its financial environment. The far-reaching transformation of banks and the banking sectors is accompanied by some institutional and socioeconomic processes. Regarding institutional processes the book provides insight into the digitalization of the banking sector from a legal point of view. Traditionally banking is strongly regulated by norms and rules and this status should be maintained when new entities are entering the sector and/or when new technological solutions contribute to the provision of banking services. Regarding socioeconomic processes it must be highlighted that digitalization is exerting a powerful impact on societies. One significant example among others is the increase in the financial inclusion of disadvantaged groups (especially customers either underserved by the traditional financial sector or unbanked). The socioeconomic aspect however has a much greater dimension and its selected aspects are described in this book. The principal audience of the book will be scholars in the fields of banking and finance but also other related disciplines in the social sciences that are of particular relevance to the banking sector’s digital transformation. This includes legal science management and psychology. The book also targets professionals in the financial industry interested in the impact of new financial technologies on banking sectors and bank services particularly with a main focus on legal and socioeconomic dimensions. French Banking and Entrepreneurialism in China and Hong Kong From the 1850s to 1980s

Many books have addressed the economic and financial history of Hong Kong and the imperialist conflicts in the key Chinese port-cities but very few books have explored French initiatives and performance in this area beyond diplomacy geopolitics or cultural issues. In this book Hubert Bonin confronts arguments about the great divergence the first globalisation and forms of economic patriotism. He gauges the competitive edge of French companies and banks their struggle with British domination (HBSC Chartered shipping trade houses/hongs) and their resistance against competitors from other countries (Japan Germany Netherlands Belgium USA or Russia). The book delves into studies of management abroad therefore mixing broad geo-economic issues with precise business history and deep banking history. The connections between French interests in China and Hong Kong and the colony of Indochina are established too. A second part of the book is dedicated to the case study of Hong Kong as the British colony acted as a hub for Asian and European interests at the heart of connections with mainland China and some neighbouring territories (Indochina etc. ). This is essential reading for academics interested in banking and business history the history of entrepreneurship as well as those involved in the contemporary history of China and Hong Kong in the assessment of world-wide geo-economic competition between European powers in Asia (Great-Britain and France) and in the first stages of economic modernity along European models in emerging modern China. | French Banking and Entrepreneurialism in China and Hong Kong From the 1850s to 1980s

The Pursuit of History Aims Methods and New Directions in the Study of History

The Pursuit of History Aims Methods and New Directions in the Study of History

This classic introduction to the study of history invites the reader to stand back and consider some of its most fundamental questions – what is the point of studying history? How do we know about the past? Does an objective historical truth exist and can we ever access it? In answering these central questions John Tosh argues that despite the impression of fragmentation created by Postmodernism in recent years history is a coherent discipline which still bears the imprint of its nineteenth-century origins. Consistently clear-sighted he provides a lively and compelling guide to a complex and sometimes controversial subject while making his readers vividly aware of just how far our historical knowledge is conditioned by the character of the sources and the methods of the historians who work on them. History does not stand still and this updated seventh edition deals with complex and wide-ranging material in a clear and accessible way that is up-to-date with current historiographical trends. A fuller treatment is given to the importance of digitization both in the section on source criticism and in relation to public history reflecting its growing importance within historical study. Both the text and references have been expanded to include a fuller range of both American and global scholarship and the book concludes with a forthright reminder that historical perspective illuminates major problems in the present. Lucid and engaging this edition retains the user-friendly features that make it a favourite with both students and lecturers including marginal glosses illustrations and suggestions for further reading. Along with its companion website this is an essential guide to the theory and practice of history. | The Pursuit of History Aims Methods and New Directions in the Study of History
