The Deep Psychology of BDSM and Kink Jungian and Archetypal Perspectives on the Soul’s Transgressive Necessities

This fascinating volume investigates how the concept of soul is connected to BDSM and kink exploring the world of alternative sexualities through the psychology of C. G. Jung and James Hillman as readers are guided on a provocative and lively journey through darker aspects of the sexual imagination. Contextualized both in sexual history and contemporary events the book unveils surprising points of correspondence between the tortured fantasy-images of Jung’s The Red Book and the modern world of BDSM and describes from Hillman’s psychology a soul-centered perspective that affirms the psychological value of fantasy-images animating our human lives. The book also considers the collective archetypal sources of historical trauma which have provided inspiration to some of the more disquieting aspects of BDSM and details how the deep psychology of BDSM creates a space in the modern world to ethically engage these practices. Kinksters and BDSM practitioners will discover a psychological language that clarifies and affirms why these activities and relationships can be so intensely intimate pleasurable and transformative. Psychotherapists and enthusiasts of Jungian and archetypal psychology will find fresh insights here that support the practice of BDSM as a form of individuation and a path for bringing soul into the world. | The Deep Psychology of BDSM and Kink Jungian and Archetypal Perspectives on the Soul’s Transgressive Necessities

Archetypal Grief Slavery’s Legacy of Intergenerational Child Loss

Archetypal Grief: Slavery’s Legacy of Intergenerational Child Loss is a powerful exploration of the intergenerational psychological effects of child loss as experienced by women held in slavery in the Americas and of its ongoing effects in contemporary society. It presents the concept of archetypal grief in African American women: cultural trauma so deeply wounding that it spans generations. The broader context of slavery and the conditions leading to the development of archetypal grief are examined with topics including the visibility/invisibility of the African female body the archetype of the mother stereotypes about black women and the significance of rites of passage. The discussion is placed in the context of contemporary America and the economic educational spiritual and political legacy of slavery. Psychoanalytic Reflections on The Freudian Death Drive In Theory the Clinic and Art

Psychoanalytic Reflections on The Freudian Death Drive In Theory the Clinic and Art

Psychoanalytic Reflections on The Freudian Death Drive is a highly accessible book that investigates the relevance complexity and originality of a hugely controversial Freudian concept which the author argues continues to exert enormous influence on modernity and plays an often-imperceptible role in the violence and so-called sad passions of contemporary society. With examples from cinema literature and the consulting room the book’s four chapters – theory the clinic art and contemporaneity – investigate every angle usually little explored of the death drive: its positive functions such as its contribution to subjectification; its ambiguous relationship with sublimation; the clues it provides about transgenerational matters; and its effects on the feminine. This is not a book about aggression a type of extroflection of the death drive made visible studied and striking; rather it is about the derivatives of the pulsion that changes in the clinic in life in society in artistic forms. With bold and innovative concepts and by making connections to film and books Rossella Valdrè unequivocally argues that the contemporary clinic is a clinic of the death drive. Psychoanalytic Reflections on The Freudian Death Drive seeks to relaunch the debate on a controversial and neglected concept and will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Today’s renewed interest in the Freudian death drive attests to its extraordinary ability to explain both new pathologies and socio-economic phenomena. | Psychoanalytic Reflections on The Freudian Death Drive In Theory the Clinic and Art

Reflections on the 2019 South African General Elections Quo Vadis?

Reflections on the 2019 South African General Elections Quo Vadis?

Reflections on the 2019 South African General Elections is a critical reflection on the key lessons of Elections 2019 in South Africa focusing on the future of the country’s electoral democracy. The volume engages questions on land election campaigns voter turnout voter apathy and how opposition parties will be forced to co-exist in the context of declining electoral dominance the ANC once comfortably held. An important reflection on the lessons of the 2019 South African General Elections the contributors ask: Quo Vadis South Africa? The 2019 General Elections marked a watershed in South Africa’s political landscape. The ANC under the banner of a narrative of regeneration and getting back on the moral path dipped below the 60 % mark for the first time in South Africa’s democratic history. This decline in electoral support for the party may be interpreted as a degeneration of the ANC through the loss of its moral stature the erosion of its integrity and disillusionment with its performance as a governing party. Opposition political parties could not capitalise on this seeming disillusionment with the ruling ANC. Caught in their own factional battles and in the midst of corruption scandals opposition parties were unable to successfully increase their share of the vote and capture the undecided and disillusioned voter. Considering the future of South Africa’s electoral democracy at 25 years of democracy Reflections on the 2019 South African General Elections will be of great interest to scholars of African Studies South Africa Governance and Elections. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Politikon: South African Journal of Political Studies. | Reflections on the 2019 South African General Elections Quo Vadis?

The International Politics of Logos Colours Symbols Cues and Identities

The International Politics of Logos Colours Symbols Cues and Identities

The International Politics of Logos provides the first systematic analysis of logos and the role they play in international politics. Whilst there is growing scholarly interest in visual politics logos have largely remained hidden in plain sight despite being the most important symbol of a variety of organizations. Visual artefacts such as logos play an increasingly central role in politics. Candidates running for office carefully choose the images they share on social media political parties devise effective brands and NGOs use visual artefacts for advocacy and advertisement. Visual artefacts are also vital for violent non-state actors ranging from private military and security companies (PMSCs) to terrorists. This book provides a wealth of data on the logos chosen by a variety of organizations examining how they vary between actors across types of organizations and over time. It offers methodological innovations to the study of logos and visual politics highlighting the potential of combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies to study the colours symbols and types of logos and other visual artefacts. The book examines the role of colours as cues and the causal connection between chromatic choices and ideology the influence of socialization and norm diffusion dynamics in the choice to showcase (or scrap) specific symbols and the relationship between branding decisions and the structure and strategies of specific organizations. This book will appeal to students and scholars of visual politics and visual communication as well as those researching political parties PMSCs and terrorist groups. It will also be of interest to political security and marketing professionals. | The International Politics of Logos Colours Symbols Cues and Identities

Reflections on the Modern and the Global

Reflections on the Modern and the Global

Over the past five hundred years historians and other social scientists have perceived an extraordinary occurance: the transition from the Middle Ages via the Renaissance to modernity. Equally remarkable has been the transition taking place in the last fifty years from modernity to globalization a period marked by increasing interdependency and interconnectivity as evidenced by events such as the advent of the computer. Bruce Mazlish argues that in order to understand ourselves in the world today we need to know more about the nature of both concepts. Mazlish discusses the transition in terms of reflections. Rather than adding to the enormous amount of archival research that already exists he instead examines slices of modernity the way of seeing the sense of self for example as if under a microscope. He sees modernity as strongly marked by its insistence on freedom of political and religious thought and the rights of man (later expanded to include women). Such changes did not happen all at once but as a gradual development. While some prefer to contemplate the transition from the modern to the global as a continuous seamless development Mazlish argues that post-WWII developments are best understood in terms of a break or a rupture. Illustrating that the process was further accelerated by the computer revolution and the launching of artificial satellites Mazlish places the events of 1989 in the framework of globalization. He concludes by inquiring further into the significance of the transition from modernity to globalization and its impact upon thought and identity. | Reflections on the Modern and the Global

An Analysis of Henry Kissinger's World Order Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History

An Analysis of Henry Kissinger's World Order Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History

Henry Kissinger’s 2014 book World Order: Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History not only offers a summary of thinking developed throughout a long and highly influential career–it is also an intervention in international relations theory by one of the most famous statesmen of the twentieth century. Kissinger initially trained as a university professor before becoming Secretary of State to President Richard Nixon in 1973 – a position in which he both won the Nobel Peace Prize and was accused of war crimes by protesters against American military actions in Vietnam. While a controversial figure Kissinger is widely agreed to have a unique level of practical and theoretical expertise in politics and international relations – and World Order is the culmination of a lifetime’s experience of work in those fields. The product of a master of the critical thinking skill of interpretation World Order takes on the challenge of defining the worldviews at play in global politics today. Clarifying precisely what is meant by the different notions of ‘order’ imagined by nations across the world as Kissinger does highlights the challenges of world politics and sharpens the focus on efforts to make surmounting these divisions possible. While Kissinger’s own reputation will likely remain equivocal there is no doubting the interpretative skills he displays in this engaging and illuminating text. | An Analysis of Henry Kissinger's World Order Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History
