Andrew D. Gordon/Frank Villafranca: The Bluesier Side Of Jazz - Alto Saxophone/E Flat Instruments

Andrew D. Gordon/Frank Villafranca: The Bluesier Side Of Jazz - Alto Saxophone/E Flat Instruments

The Bluesier Side of Jazz for Alto Saxophone and Eb instruments by Andrew D. Gordon and Frank Villafranca was inspired by the piano students Andrew teaches at Shepherd University School of Music in Los Angeles and is dedicated to those students: Jungwon, Yumiko, Yoko, Eunice, Sooji, Hae Ji and Ok Kyu. As with many students that come from a classical background it is a difficult transition to learn to play Blues & Jazz. When a musician improvises they usually play a variety of riffs or phrases that they have developed and learnt over a period of time and can access these phrases instantaneously whatever key they are playing in to create a seamless improvised solo from the phrases they have learnt.Andrew's idea for this book is to create phrases or riffs over two measures of various Blues progressions. He sub-divided each of the 12 Bar Blues progressions used in this book (the chord progression for Watermelon Man is a 16 measure progression) into six sections (two measures each) and within each of the six sections created four different phrases or riffs so that the student has a choice of four different phrases to play over every two measures. They can then create a solo based on which phrase they choose for each two measures. By breaking down these phrases to two measures each, he has found that the students have an easier time of learning to improvise than by trying to transcribe a whole solo from an audio recording or leaving them to their own devices in trying to play a solo based on the Blues scale or other related scales. Each of the ten examples are based on common Jazz/Blues chord progressions from Jazz songs such as "Watermelon Man", "Blue Monk", "Tenor Madness", "Route 66", "Blue Trane", "Bag's Groove" starting off with basic I-IV-V chords and increasing in complexity throughout the book. There are over 200 phrases/riffs to choose from that can be learned and applied to many types of jazz songs. The package includes:Book or PDF file30 audio tracks to play on your CD player or computerOver 200 mp3 filesOver 200 MIDI files

100 ULTIMATE SMOOTH JAZZ RIFFS FOR PIANO/KEYBOARDS

100 ULTIMATE SMOOTH JAZZ RIFFS FOR PIANO/KEYBOARDS

With the continued worldwide success of the book series Ultra Smooth Jazz Grooves that I co-authored with sax player Frank Villafranca based on compositions that we wrote for our band The Super Groovers, I have now authored this series of Smooth Jazz books for the following instruments: Piano/Keyboards, Guitar/Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Tenor and Alto Saxes, Trumpet and Trombone. Smooth Jazz covers a wide variety of different styles and I have combined elements of Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, Latin, GospeL Funk and R&B, Classical, Folk, New Age styles into the examples in the book. Smooth Jazz” is a genre of music that is predominately instrumental, usually very melodic in nature and in most cases features some jazz improvisation. and is usually performed at a medium tempo and tends to feature piano /keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, and guitar as the most common lead instruments playing the melody. Most Smooth Jazz is well produced and has memorable melodies over a backdrop of multiple tracks of rhythm instruments, keyboards, guitar, strings, synth pads, drums and percussion. Each riff has been recorded with the solo melodic instrument along with a rhythm backing track of guitar, keyboards/synths, bass, drums/percussion followed by just the backing tracks for you to practice with. Also included are backing tracks playing the chord progression through 10 times giving you extended time to practice your improvisational skills using the riffs in the book and developing them into your own style.

Ultra Smooth Jazz Grooves For Flute

Ultra Smooth Jazz Grooves For Flute

Internationally renowned authors, musicians and recording artists, Frank Villafranca and Andrew D. Gordon of The Super Groovers have composed a collection of grooves and melodies in the Smooth Jazz Genre creating an exciting supplemental jazz study series for beginner, intermediate and advanced jazz students and musicians. After releasing their first CD Supergroovin, which received world wide airplay, they recognized a need in the music publishing business for a series of books on contemporary improvising within the "Smooth Jazz" genre. Andrew composed and recorded all the rhythm tracks used in this book. In their opinion, the melodies were so catchy they couldn't resist developing them into completed songs. Mainline Connection, Villefranche?sur-Mer and You're The Only One In My Life, are a few featured on their second CD, Mainline Connection. The smooth jazz grooves in this 50 page book feature a variety of contemporary rhythm section styles including R&B, Jazz, Funk, Top 40, Rock, Gospel, Hip Hop and Latin. These stylistic influences are frequently associated with smooth jazz. Popular artists in this genre include, The Super Groovers, David Sanborn, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G, David Benoit, Dave Koz, Tom Scott, Gerald Albright, Candy Dulfer, Wilton Felder, Boney James, Chris Botti, Chuck Mangione, Sade, George Benson, Peter White, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson, George Duke, Paul Hardcastle, Joe Sample, Spyro Gyra, Pat Metheny, Four Play, The Yellow Jackets and The Rippingtons. We suggest that you become acquainted with as many of these artists as possible. On each of the 20 tracks, the groove is separated into 3 melodic ideas. Each melodic idea (example or riff) is played first, by the Flute with the groove, followed by just the rhythm section groove, without the Flute. The 1st example is usually the easiest, the 2nd slightly harder and the 3rd the most difficult. Versions for each groove are available as midi files or extended MP3 files where the rhythm tracks for each groove are recorded for approximately 2 minutes. Customer Comments I have just been given your book as a christmas present - and I am so happy to have it! Your grooves are amazing! I feel like it is really inspriring. The book was bought from Musicroom in Brighton on Western Road. My favourites so far are track 1,2 and 4... I'm on the second riff so far and they are so good!! Thank you for making the book :)

Andrew D. Gordon: 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs For Flute (Beginner Series)

Andrew D. Gordon: 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs For Flute (Beginner Series)

100 Ultimate Blues Riffs for Flute, the Beginner Series by musician, educator and world renowned author Andrew D. Gordon is an exhaustive guide to introduce beginner students to the various phrases or ?riffs? that make up Flute playing, both from a rhythmic and soloing standpoint.Due to the continued success of his more advanced series 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs Andrew decided to author a similar type of book for beginner students. This book is ideal for the beginner to intermediate music student with most of the examples notated in the easier keys. Besides learning how to play Blues riffs the book is a useful tool for sight reading exercises with many different rhythms. The 12 bar Blues progression and the Blues scale, in Andrew?s opinion, the two most important aspects of playing the Blues is explained in detail as well as ?straight? and ?swing? rhythms. There are five sections to the riffs in the book, section 1 contains basic Blues riffs, section 2 contains Rhythm & Blues influenced riffs, section 3 contains Blues/Boogie Woogie riffs, section 4 contains Rock influenced Blues riffs and section 5 contains Gospel influenced Blues riffs. Included with this book is an audio CD that contains all the riffs, recorded twice: first, sax melody, piano, guitar, bass and drums and second just the rhythm track of piano, guitar bass & drums so you can play-a-long.Review of the Sax version of the book by Skip Spratt of The Sax Shed http://saxshed.comAndrew D. Gordon of ADG Productions has recently updated and added to his popular series of books with 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs ? The Beginner Series. The original publication by the same title is geared toward intermediate to advanced students. Both books feature a companion CD and optional midi files that will help in the practice of these 100 blues riffs.I had the opportunity to preview the tenor saxophone books from the series; however the same books are published for other instruments as well. Saxophonist Frank Villafranca of the Super Groovers demonstrates each riff with the rhythm section first with and opportunity for play-along following each demo track. Andrew Gordon writes, ?For people who want to improve their ear training skills, you may want t o listen to the saxophone part and then try to duplicate what is played on the CD. I personally find I am able to memorize music quicker when I pick music out by ear than from musical notation.?As you play through the books, you will see there is some overlapping of the riffs used. In the case of the beginner series, there are some riffs that are essentially the same but with some large leaps in the lines changed - presumably to facilitate younger players.Whether reading the 100 riffs or picking them up by ear, the book can have many uses. It is good for sightreading in the style, short improvisational work or developing the ear.The clean, well-laid out books should offer a springboard into further study of the blues and improvisation.
