Marcel Mule: Scales and Arpeggios, Fundamental Exercises for the Saxophone (Volume 3)

French saxophonist, Marcel Mule (1901-2001) compiles an essential addition to Saxophone studies. Francis Poulenc: Pastourelle No.8 - Piano

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was an energetic French composer who is known for both his light-hearted instrumental works, and his more serious sacred and choral music. Pastourelle was a dance, written as one of ten movements for the children’s ballet L'Eventail De Jeanne (Jean’s Fan) in 1927. Each dance was composed by a different French composer. Only the first movement by Ravel, who also gave the first performance of the Ballet on the Piano, and Poulenc’s eighth movement have endured. An orchestral version was composed at the same time, but the original version for Piano is published here.

Henri Couillaud: 31 Etudes brillantes (Trombone solo)

Reviewed by Henri Couillaud and composed by Michel Bléger , Thirty-one Brilliant studies is a set of studies for Slide-Trombone. Written for end of cycles (pre-exams) levels, such as 3° and 6°, this piece is written in F key. These exercises are completed by other sets of studies and exercises by the same author for a complete technical formation. Michel Bléger initially wrote these studies for Tuba or for Trombone. Henri Couillaud (1878-1955) was a French trombonist and a soloist at the Paris Opera. His method was highlighting the importance of the air when playing.

Olivier Messiaen: Theme Et Variations

As a passionate composer, organist and ornithologist, many of Olivier Messiaen 's works incorporate these three elements. However, he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano, composing it as a wedding present for his first wife, Claire Delbos in 1932. The couple gave its first performance during the same year. Admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of eleven, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was an outstanding pupil, winning many prizes. Thème et Variations was composed shortly after his appointment as titular organist at the Sainte Trinité church in Paris and is often considered to be characteristic of his famous Quatour pour la fin du temps. Made up of a theme and five variations, it begins simplistically before entering the complex variations. The theme is composed in common time and at a moderate tempo. Each variation varies in dynamics, time signature, tempo, tonality and rhythm, among other elements; however, Messiaen cleverly retains suggestions of the theme all throughout. Challenging as it is, Thème et Variations is an exciting, varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists.

Pierre Petit: Petite Suite (Flute & Piano)

Petite Suite  for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit . Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, “Gai et allant” is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza.  The second part, “Lent et très chanté”, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts.  The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Petite Suite  is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7°.

Eugène Bozza: L'Étoile Du Soir For 3 Female Voices And Piano

To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains a prolific composer for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. However, his compositions for other instrumentations have not gone amiss,  L'Étoile Du Soir  being no exception. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1946, Bozza 's  L'Étoile Du Soir  is based on a poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset, a prominent poet during the early 1800s. This choral work is arranged for female voices; Soprano, Mezzo Soprano and Contralto. Containing much musical variation, Bozza 's  L'Étoile Du Soir  is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire.
