Tonight I Dance Alone for double choir a cappella consists of three poignant episodes from the life of an old man. We encounter him before his wedding, before celebrating his wedding anniversary and now as an elderly widowerwho says to his grandson:“Soon we will dance in the God-light,My love and I.Soon will the moon be ours again,And the endless shining starsIn the halls of heaven.Soon, my love, verysoon;But tonight, one last time,Tonight I dance alone.”The libretto and the descriptive music are deeply moving and constitute an ideal partnership. This is Mårten Jansson's first collaborationwiththe well-known librettist Charles Anthony Silvestri. Haydn's Symphony Hob. I:89 belongs to a group of symphonies composed between the “Paris” symphonies (Hob. I:82-87) and their “London” counterparts (Hob. I: 93-104) – the last ones he wrote before his trips to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95. The Symphony in F major is dated 1787 in the autograph score. In this work Haydn borrowed two movements from an earlier piece, possibly owing to deadline pressure. The second and fourth movements are arrangements of movements 2 and 3 from his Concerto in F major Hob. VIIh:5 for two “lire organizzate” and orchestra. The fact that he also arranged movements from his other lire concertos suggests that he regarded them as a sort of musicalquarry. This at least allowed him to recycle parts of these works after his patron had probably prohibited him from offering them commercially.

Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81, Haydn’s D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, his task being to entertain theprince with new music. Handel’s four anthems were all composed during his London period in the Chapel Royal. “As pants the hart”, his fifth setting of this Psalm text, was written in March 1738 for performance at a benefit concert for theKing’s Theatre in the Haymarket. Until just before Handel’s first visit to England, the only instrument permitted to accompany the service in the Chapel Royal was the Organ.These four works (O sing unto the LordHWV 249a, I will magnify thee HWV 250b, As pants the hart HWV 251e, Let God arise HWV 256b), with their orchestral accompaniments, thus represent something akin to a new genre in English church music.The four anthemsarepresented in clearly laid out Vocal scores with easy-to-play Piano reductions based on the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition”. The Piano Sonatas are regarded as the central works of Alexander Scriabin’s compositional output. No other composer after Beethoven reshaped this genre so radically, thereby reinvigorating thetradition of the sonata. Scriabin’s desire not simply to continue the existing tradition, but to surpass it, is evident as early as his first sonatas. These are exciting works from the pianist’s perspective and in theirabundance of expression and wealth of imagination. Up to the third sonata Scriabin developed a distinctive feeling for structural coherence and cyclical unity which at the same time revealed poeticqualities.Thisvolume contains the earlier works; sonatas officially published during the composer’s lifetime as No. 1 op. 6, No. 2 (Sonate-Fantaisie) op. 19 and No. 3 op. 23 as well as the sonatas written during his youth,in G-sharp minor (1886) and E-flat minor (1887-89).
