He is best remembered for his 1936 children’s theatrical work, Peter And The Wolf, but he also wrote severaloperas, symphonies, ballets and concertos. He was a leading figure in the Neoclassical movement; his dissonant harmonies and virtuosic style frequently shocked audiences and helped establish him as one of the foremost composersofhis generation.

Set of parts for Shostakovich's String Quartet No.8 from Opus 110. This piece was written for and dedicated to the 'victims of Fascism' following a trip to Dresden. There are many recognisable themes in the piece includingthe Cello Concerto No. 1 and a little known tune from his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. This melody had itself been suppressed by official Soviet condemnation, many critics believe that in this piece Shostakovich is alsoportraying himself as a victim of Facism and tyranny.

Preludi (24) Op. 34

Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes for solo Piano were composed within a relatively short space of time during the winter of 1932/3. Just like in his later work, 24 Preludes and Fugues (Opus 87), thepieces in 24 Preludes form a cycle in each of the 12 major and minor keys. Therefore, even though these Preludes are often performed separately, or as selections made into a group, the manner oftheir composition implies that they are better perceived as a set. Nevertheless, the memorable individuality of the clearly defined mood and character of each of these 24 short pieces easily allows for selectiveperformancechoices. Shostakovich's music is characterized by sharp contrasts, elements of the grotesque, and ambivalent tonality making the 24 Preludes perfect for any skilful pianist seeking todisplay technical and expressive talent.
