Georg Östereich and Bokemeyer as music collectors

Music between Schütz and Bach is known to posterity above all thanks to two music collections from the Baltic region. One of these was initiated by Gustav Düben in Stockholm, and the other can be traced back to Georg Österreich, the Kapellmeister of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (the latter is known as the Bokemeyer Collection). Contributions to the volume focus on Georg Österreich. They are dedicated to his life, his collection and his circle, and explore connections to the two other collectors in the same field, Düben and Heinrich Bokemeyer. A work which has the character of a handbook for a central music-historical epoch!

Georg Friedrich Händel: Messiah

George Frideric Handel is considered England’s first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759.In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions.

Georg Friedrich Händel: Saul : Oratorium

Saul, published for the first time in the version conducted by Handel himself. Saul is one of the most dramatic of Handel's oratorios. To a greater extent than almost any other oratorio it reveals with its gripping dramatic power its proximity to opera of its time. The score demands what was at the time Handel’s most varied orchestra. The normal opera orchestra of the day was augmented by trombones, harp, solo organ, carillon [Glockenspiel] and large kettledrums. The choir functions for the first time as a central participant in dramatic action, while also undertaking commentating functions as in a Greek tragedy. This new edition makes use for the first time of musicalmaterial revealed by the latest Handel research, based as its most important source on the conducting score from which Handel himself directed his performances. Only this research has shown which arias, choruses, recitatives and instrumental pieces, after he had made numerous corrections in his autograph, Handel chose for his performances, and in what order they were given. The result has produced, apart from many changes of details [e.g. autograph instructions concerning the use of the organ], uncommon ordering of individual pieces, and passages with altered notes.

Georg Friedrich Händel: Neun deutsche Arien

Praise of the beauty of nature and eternal life are the subjects of the sacred poems by B. H. Brockes which Handel set to music in his "Nine German Arias". In these nine pieces for soprano and a small group of instruments, to be chosen at will, Handel drew in many places on music from his own operas, with the voice part in the German arias adapted to be less virtuosic and more deeply expressive. The "Three German Arias", recorded for the first time on this CD, by Johann Mattheson, which were formerly attributed to Handel, are a real discovery for the repertoire. The soprano Monika Mauch is accompanied in her beautiful interpretation of the arias by the specialist ensembleL'arpa festante.

Gottwald: Vokalbearbeitungen [Grün]

For more than twenty years the choral conductor and musicologist Clytus Gottwald has been making transcriptions of piano-accompanied Lieder and instrumental works for a cappella choir. These arrangements employ techniques found in the music of Ligeti. The KammerChor Saarbrücken [Georg Grün] presents a selection of these works which make the highest demands on vocal ensembles.

Weihnachtshistorie. Complete recordings, Vol. 10

The tenth volume of the recording of Schütz’s complete works presents the Weihnachtshistorie SWV 435 [Christmas History]. The well-known Christmas History is supplemented with additional pieces for the Christmas season, including the Magnificat SWV 468. Under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann, the Dresdner Kammerchor and the Dresdner Barockorchester perform together with renowned soloists such as Gerlinde Sämann, Marie Luise Werneburg and Georg Poplutz [as Evangelist]. The latest CD by the Alsfelder Vokalensemble under their long-standing conductor Wolfgang Helbich presents a number of choral music rarities for Advent and Christmas by composers such as Georg Joseph Vogler, Valentin Rathgeber, Max Reger and many others, which are truly worth hearing. The flow of this diversely compiled program is intermittently varied by organ and soloistic vocal works. The present CD is also, in a way, the artistic legacy of the conductor who unexpectedly passed away in April 2013, shortly after completing this recording.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart : Deutsches Nunc dimittis II - A Dorian - SWV 433

Schütz set the German Nunc dimittis, the canticle for liturgical Vespers, on the death of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I in 1656 “in two different ways” and had these printed. But unfortunately the 1st soprano part is lost. In this edition it has been reconstructed by Helmut Lauterwasser for the Stuttgart Schütz Edition. In another edition, Carus also offers the historic reconstruction of the part made by Heinrich von Herzogenberg in 1892 (available as Carus 20.433). Separate edition from Vol. 19 of the Stuttgart Schütz Edition (Complete Edition Carus 20.919).

Weihnachtslieder mit dem Thomanerchor Leipzig

The inspired singing of Christmas carols by the Thomanerchor Leipzig, attracts large congregations to the church every Christmas. The present CD documents this long tradition. Georg Christoph Biller, the sixteenth Thomaskantor since Bach, has assembled the program on a theological basis: first come Old Testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah, which is finally celebrated musically by the entire congragation. Along with well-known carols such as "Macht hoch die Tür", "O du fröhliche" and "Stille Nacht" the less familiar Christmas songs in this recording bring attractions of their own, and they enable the listener to take part in the Christmas carol singing of theThomanerchor Leipzig.

Ich hebe meine Augen auf : Telemann, Heinichen & Graupner in Leipzig

Even in the 18th century life in university towns offered many temptations, just made to distract students from their studies, though certainly music ranked among the more harmless diversions. Evidently, teems of students were drawn, particularly to sacred services in Leipzig but also, after 1701 to Georg Philipp Telemann's Collegium musicum, which he founded in 1701. This CD, performed by L'arpa festante and Rien Voskuilen, gives an admirable impression of the high level musical quality accessible in the University town of Leipzig at the beginning of the 18th century, when Telemann, Heinichen, and Graupner were making music there and presumably studying law "on theside."

Telemannisches Gesangbuch

“Nun danket alle Gott”, “Befiehl du deine Wege” und “Ein feste Burg” Georg Philipp Teleman collected these and other well-known chorales in his Fast allgemeinen Evangelisch-Musicalischen Lieder-Buch from 1730. This “Telemannische Gesangbuch,“ as it was later also known, contains about 2,000 hymns, with over 500 melodies. Telemann’s declared goal was to create a practical hymnbook for use all of the German speaking regions. That was the starting point of the unique success story of a Protestant hymnbook. This, to date, buried musical treasure has now been produced as a CD by Klaus Mertens, Thomas Fritzsch, Stefan Maass and Michael Schönheit, as well the boysoprano, Vincent Frisch as a world premiere recording. Rheinberger: Missa et Motetti [Musica Sacra IX]

Highly regarded as a composer, and a much sought after teacher of composition, Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger [1839 1901] was of great importance, with European stature. His more than 200 sacred works represent a significant contribution to church music of the 19th century. For many years Carus has made a name for itself through the rediscovery of this musical treasure. The basis for the CD series “Musica Sacra” is the Complete Edition of Rheinberger’s works, which has also been published by Carus. In addition to three motets, the present CD in this series also contains Rheinberger’s final, unfinished setting of the Mass composed in the year of his death; itincludes the Credo, which was reconstructed using his sketches. The works on this CD, performed by Georg Grün with his KammerChor Saarbrücken, are primarily world premiere recordings.

Calmus Ensemble - Elke Heidenreich: Nachtgedanken

The Calmus Ensemble and Elke Heidenreich became acquainted during an engagement on a cruise ship, and the idea of collaborating on a musical-literary project was born. The “Nachtgedanken” [Nocturnal Thoughts] deal with the thoughts that sometimes unbidden take possession of our minds during the night, be they more or less beautiful, stimulating or frightening, funny or sad. Music alternates with the spoken word. In addition to her own writings, Elke Heidenreich reads texts by Erich Kästner, Ludwig Tieck, Marcel Proust and others. The musical contributions consist almost entirely of music that was composed or arranged for the Calmus Ensemble: Harald Banter composed jazzballads on poems by Charles Baudelaire and set Christian Morgenstern’s Galgenlieder to music. Sebastian Krause, who sings altus in the Calmus Ensemble, arranged several well-known chansons by Georg Kreisler for the ensemble. The result is a wonderful production, suitable for reveries and pleasure, pondering over and hearing again and again not only on mellow summer evenings.

Matthäuspassion. Complete recording, Vol. 11

Volume 11 of the celebrated complete recording of Schütz’s works presents the St. Matthew Passion, SWV 479. Schütz’s Passions according to the evangelists Matthew, Luke and John were all commissioned by the court in Dresden: they were pure a cappella settings of high artisanal standard combined with a profound, intensely personal expressivity, these works form the conclusion of Schütz’s settings of biblical scenes. They are the mature works of old age, representing, as it were, the crowning conclusion of an entire musical epoch. The St. Matthew Passion, the last of the three passion settings, was composed in 1666. Particularly in this work the composer called for the Bible textsto be sung in an emphatic declamatory style, requiring flawless intonation and perfect comprehensibility of the words. These requirements are effortlessly met by Georg Poplutz as the Evangelist and the excellent Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. The CD program is ideally complemented by the "Litania" SWV 458, the psalm setting "In dich habe ich gehoffet, Herr" SWV 128, as well as "O du allersüßester und liebster Herr Jesu" SWV 340.
