The Prelude

The composer originally intended to model this new work on her favourite flute piece, Bach’s Second Suite, and started to write an Overture. Sensing great energy from this beautiful medium, though, she soon found that she had written over ten minutes’ worth of continuous music for the opening movement alone. She then decided to separate this music into five shorter sections, The Prelude, Waltz macabre, Aria, Menuet sauvage and Sicilienne/Berceuse. Parts available: CH88068-01.

In the words of the composer "Insomnia was written between March and November 2002. Technically speaking, it is a set of variations based on a harmonic model separated by a Ritornello-like section, which is essentially a pedal point on the note e. The sound of Insomnia is darker and deeper than that of some of my other orchestral works. I decided to add a quartet of Wagner Tubas to the brass section for the very particular sonority only these rare and weird instruments can produce."

Geoffrey Burgon: Dos Coros For 12 Solo Voices Or Choir

De Algunos Canciones de Juan de la Cruz. This work was commissioned by the BBC for the 10th anniversary of the BBC Northern Singers in 1975. 'Dos Coros is a setting for voices of two poems by the 16th century Spanish mystic St John of the Cross. St John is widely considered to be the greatest of the Spanish mystic poets, because he comes closest to expressing what is usually considered to be inexpressible - mystical experience. His poetry is all about the intense excitement of the union with God, but, paradoxically, the word God is rarely used, and not at all in the two poems set here. Another paradox is that he is able to express great serenity by employing the imagery of rushing water, flight and even drunkenness. If mystical experience is near impossible to convey in words, then maybe it is natural that many composers have taken up the challenge of conveying it in their own medium.' Geoffrey Burgon

Joby Talbot: The Dying Swan Suite (Piano Score)

The Dying Swan, a score to a 1916 Russian silent film made by Yevgeny Bauer, was commissioned by the British Film Institute in 2002. The Dying Swan is intriguing because its heroine is a mute. She turns to ballet dancing after becoming unlucky in love and dances the famous Dying Swan which in turn fascinates an aristocratic dabbler in the arts who wants to catch the essence of death on canvas. He invites her to be an artist's model, and all goes well until her lover discovers her again. She is overjoyed but, going for her final sitting, the painter is angry that her pallor of death has turned to tears of joy, and he murders her.

James Whitbourn: The Seven Heavens - The Life Of C.S. Lewis In The Planets Of The Middle Ages (Vocal Score)

The Seven Heavens - The Life Of C.S. Lewis In The Planets Of The Middle Ages is a work by James Whitbourn for SATB Chorus and Orchestra. The piece was commissioned by the Belfast Philharmonic Society on the occasion of their 140th Anniversary Season 2014-5, and first performed in the Ulster Hall on 30th May 2015 by Belfast Philharmonic Choir. The work lasts around 31 minutes and this is the Vocal Score . This Vocal Score is compatible with both the Orchestral version and the Chamber Ensemble version. The libretto is a "musical portrait of C.S. Lewis", viewed through the lens of the seven heavens of the pre-Copernican model of the solar system, in which Lewis had a deep interest. The seven movements follow these seven planets, which also correspond to the days of the week, telling the story of Lewis's life. The text itself is drawn from a variety of sources, including the Orphic hymns, Psalms, Shakespeare, Shelley, C.S. Lewis himself, and others.
