For here in Katra where he lived, they rush into their houses, locking all the doors, locking all the windows, crying 'Ghost! Ghost! Ghost! Ghost! Ghost!' at the sight of him. He was in prison, you see, where he was hospitalised. Rumours were rife: he's fallen ill; he's been moved to another town; he's dead; cremated. Ganeshi, his cousin's wife, performed the last rites so his spirit could rest. 'Imagine our surprise when he turned up alive,' she said, 'We thought he was dead.' Poor Raju. Poor Raju, Raju Raghuvanshi; he's technically a ghost. 'Now I have to prove I'm alive. N.V. Vayangankar, Chief of Police, will help me. I have property, you see, a few acres of land. I know their game. They shall not beat me. I say to them: "But, can't you see that my feet are the right way round? If I was a spirit or a ghost, they'd turn backwards". I was not gone long, now I don?t exist.'"

Igor Stravinsky: Suites Nos. 1 And 2

The Suite For Small Orchestra No.1 was composed between 1917 and 1925. Carl Vine: Piano Sonata

A complex and challenging Piano Sonata composed by Carl Vine for the Sydney Dance Company in 1991. The piece was first performed by Michael Harvey in North Melbourne in June 1991. The music is full of rich chordal movements, unusual flowing harmonies and tonalities, with great extremes of dynamic and energy. Reflecting the physical origins of the piece as a dance, the music is dotted with very strict changes of tempo which require exact adherence, rather than the Rubato approach that typifies much Piano interpretations.

The Harvest Of Sorrow was fifth in a collection of six songs for Piano and solo Voice, published in 1893 as Rachmaninoff’s opus 4. This introduction is distinguished from the setting of Michaelangelo's test by adopting a plainsong style, although it builds to a climax with progressively rich harmony Duration: c 12 minutes.

These three piano pieces, entitled respectively For a Statesman, For a Canary, For a Rich Aunt, are probably the best-known of all Berners' early works, though usually more through their reputation than through the music. They were the first of his published music to be publicly performed - by Casella in March 1917 - and were first published in Italy, as well as being used in a variety of contexts later. Although the pieces are dissonant, they use extensions of a tonal musical language: at the climax of the first piece, the music is suddenly given a key-signature of E flat minor, and a short sequence form the last piece was used by Casella as an illustration in his book on the evolution of the perfect cadence. They use the same kinds of ostinato effects and have a similarly extreme dynamic range.

Peter Maxwell Davies: Caroline Mathilde Act I (Concert Suite) (Miniature Score)

The story centres on the English princess Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775), sister of George III, who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King, Christian VII. The ballet portrays her unhappy marriage, the King's growing madness and her fatal love-affair with Struensee, the King's influential physician, which leads to their arrest, his execution and her exile, at the age of 20, separated from her two young children. In keeping with the period, and perhaps also with the traditions of Romantic ballet, the music is relatively simple in harmony and form, and most of the action is conveyed in set-piece dances. The suite, which consists essentially of the second half of Act I, begins with one of these, a bristling interplay of wind and string ensembles in D major, portraying in the ballet a curious nuptial game with the king and princess on movable pedestals. The slow music that follows has to do with the king's healing by Dr. Struensee and the new queen's unquiet reverie (oboe and cor anglais solos). Then the suite, like the act, is capped by a pair of pas-de-deux, the first savage and bizarre for the royal couple, the second rich and passionate for the queen and the miracle-working doctor.Score (miniature). Kevin Volans: L’Africaine

Kevin Volans'  L’Africaine for Piano solo. Duration: 22 minutes. Composers Note: Most of the piano music I have written has focussed on a number of 20th century musical concerns: with complex rhythmic patterning, a- and poly-tonality, multiple layering of parts, on occasion introducing different tone colours (like playing inside the instrument or electronic modulation) – but above all, resonance.  The development of the piano in 19th century, with its increased size, pitch and dynamic range, led above all to an instrument capable of rich and full resonance, that could rival even an orchestra. All centred around the pedal – in Anton Rubinstein's words: The soul of the piano.  This time I thought it would be interesting to write a piece which pays no attention to this tradition; to write a piece from the point of view of some African compositional methods and ways of patterning – mainly interlocking parts which result in shifting downbeats. For a large part of the piece I treat the left and right hands as two complementary performers.  So, hardly any pedal, no concerns with contemporary harmony, style, structure or technology. I did slip in a slightly concealed reference to Debussy's  L'Isle Joyeuse , however. The piece is roughly 22 minutes long, in three sections, and the title is a slightly tongue-in-cheek reference to Couperin.
