Nico Muhly: It Remains To Be Seen (Full Score)

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music, and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed, walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road, arguing about music in pairs and threes, and at the sign of bright headlights from behind, reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited, occasionally illuminated, dark road filled with arguing, cars, fragments of remembered music, and a constant, propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly

John Tavener: Let Not The Prince Be Silent

This work for unaccompanied double choir (SATBSATB) was commissioned by the Summer Music Society of Dorset. It was first performed in May 1989 at Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, by the Tallis Scholars conducted by Peter Phillips.Tavener:The remarkable text by Clement of Alexandria inspired this piece for double choir. From the stand point of today, when I take a perennialist and therefore universalist stance concerning all the main great religious traditions, this text is very close to my heart, as is also the music. The opening theme sung by the two choirs forms the basis of the whole work. Bold, simple, massive and ecstatic in character, I hope that this work restores something of a Gnostic dimension to Christianity, the loss of which could be said to be one of the greatest tragedies of Christianity in the West.

For massed unison voices, organ, piano and percussion, with optional SATB chorus.All shall be Amen and Alleluia was commissioned as the concluding piece for a concert in Princeton University Chapel, New Jersey on April 29, 2009, to be sung by a large chorus of 500 voices. It was written to follow a performance of Son of God Mass, by the same composer, sung by a smaller choral group.

Having previously set two sections of it as separate a cappella choruses and one for two countertenors and strings, I've long wanted to make a complete setting of the work and, by arranging the countertenor piece for a cappella chorus and setting the remaining verses as two more anthems for the same forces, I've completed the task. Dave Heath: Out Of The Cool (Flute And Piano)

Composer's NoteOut Of The Cool was my first work and inspired by the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. It was originally written for the flute, but may equally well be played on the violin, cello or soprano saxophone.The piece is in three sections - slow/fast/slow. I have not marked many dynamics or phrasings, and those shown are suggestions only. The slow sections in particular should be very free rhythmically, and each performer should feel free to interpret the piece in his own way. The pedalling marks, however, are more specific, as I have used them to show how notes and chords are to be sustained. Some of the blurred effects may seem strange at first, but this pedalling is essential to the style of the piece. Above all, Out Of The Cool was written to be enjoyed, so have fun with it!David Heath.

Written for unaccompanied SATB choir. The composer writes The Open Secret is a hadith, or traditional saying of the Prophet Mohammad, attributed to Ali Ibn Abi Talib. The profundity of this hadith moved me to make this setting for SATB choir. The music is intended to be used in a Christian context, to promote an understanding of the depth and beauty of Islam.

Two hymns written for unaccompanied choir by Tavener. The first is for SAATBBSAATBB double choir, and is a setting of a text from the Liturgy of St. Basil. The second is for SSATBBB choir and comes from the Vigil Service of the Dormition (or falling asleep) of the Mother of God. She invites the apostles to gather together from the ends of the earth to bury her body in Gethsemane, and asks her son to receive the spirit.Two hymns to the Mother of God were first performed in December 1985 by the Choir of Winchester Cathedral conducted by Martin Neary.
