Sea Blue

The seaside, a blue lagoon under the sun… Only some birds disrupt tranquillity, but then leave by the evening. An idyllic vision illustrated by the sound of young violinists. Composer Pascal Proust has many years of experience as a musician and music teacher. His work includes several hundred compositions for the most diverse instrumentations. He wrote Sea Blue for violinists with an ability of approximately 3 4 years’ experience. He paid special attention to an easy-to-follow, attractive musical style. Sea Blue is an ideal performance or competition work for young musicians.

Homage : Guardians of the Sea

This work was commissioned by the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force Band, based at Kure City, Hiroshima, Japan, to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The composer used a passage from Kosaku Yamada’s Umi No Sakimori (Sakimori of the Sea), ceremonial music of the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The result is Homage, expressing Yagisawa’s respect for Yamada and his work—a tribute to a composer whose legacy includes a large number of Japanese songs.

Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars.

This piece is a tribute to the sun (Verso il Sole) as an existential symbol of life and energy.

Prior to the second world war Harry James was a ‘name’. In 1939 this trumpet player/composer founded his own orchestra with which he undertook a series of successful tours. Naohiro Iwai wrote this solo for trumpet with wind band accompaniment as an ode to Harry James, making use of the golden oldies Sleepy Lagoon and Ciribiribin.
