The Heavens Declare the Glory of God : From Music of the Spheres

This is the first movement (Prologue) of a five-movement work featuring texts by Johannes Kepler, John Donne, and the Psalms. Dedicated to Swiss astrophysicist Arnold Benz, a relative of the composer, the work is based on melodic ideas written to be overlaid with images of various constellations. "The Heavens Declare" is a setting of Psalm 19: 1-4, in which tenor soli and SATB choir alternately declaim the text in a call-and-response structure.

This engaging work by Mary Beth Bennett was commissioned by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists to celebrate its 50th anniversary. A soft misterioso section, reminiscent of Jean Langlais' "Song of Peace," begins the work, followed by a section of loud musical cries of anguish. An introspective central section of free melody in a Middle-Eastern mode ensues, and the work concludes with the hymn tune VICTORY ("The Strife is O'er") superimposed over it. Duration: 5:00

The poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is especially appealing due to the wide range of topics, diversity of mood and peculiar imagination of the poet. The writings are reflective, passionate, witty, sensuous, observant, and ridiculously humorous. Her heart soars. Her mind pokes fun! Emily was truly a New Englander. Her poems are understated and compact. Her love of Nature focuses on small things- birds, bees, meadows and a pond.In creating the musical settings, the composer (herself a New Englander) endeavored to capture the spirit of the poetry, and of the poet, with songs diverse in style, and concise in form. Everything from romance to frogs is explored,briefly.Great delight is taken in creating musical translations of the colorful imagery: the letters floating off on the breeze ("My Letter to the World"): the shimmering moonlight ("The Moon and the Sea"): a frog croaking in a bog ("The Frog in the Bog"): hopeful birds hopping about ("Hope" with Feathers"): the boat of passion riding the waves and then settling into its mooring ("Passion"): the ship's cannon firing in celebration ("Joy"): and the tiniest, lightest gifts of Nature ("All I Have to Bring"). Variations on Outburst of Spring Triumphant : A Theme of Ludwig Diehn

This work is built on a theme of the late Virginia composer, Ludwig Liehn. Commissioned for the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists, it has six movemements: Intrada (2 versions are printed), Ostinato, Celestes, Aria, Interlude, and Toccata. The first five movements are varied in style and mood. The final movement is a fiery toccata. This accessible and captivating piece has been featured on American Public Media's "Pipedreams" program, and recently received its European premiere at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. The vocal sounds represent a uniquely American form of "mouth music"- a style of traditional singing where nonsense words are used to mimic the sounds of instruments or the rhythms of a dance. A Bridge of Peace

This is a song of hope--of building a bridge of peace between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. Their trees (Jaffa Orange in Israel, Olive on Arab lands) reach out their branches as hands across the sky. The musical setting presents the opening verses in dialogue between women's and men's voices. A combative middle section introduces words such as oppressor and jailor. Reference is made to poisoned gases and scud missiles. And then the music heals. There is a shift to the major tonality. The voices soar with the phrases "let us build a strong bridge of jasmine understanding, where each shall sit with her child, and none shall make them afraid." Duration:4:00

A familiar American folk song is A Man of Constant Sorrow. Adaptations exist for a maid of constant sorrow as well. This is a very simple melody, placed in the key of C major. The message is a mournful one. The soul is troubled, and not at rest. “All through this world, I’m bound to ramble...perhaps I’ll take the very next train.” Then, later, “perhaps I’ll die upon this train.” Some comfort is taken with the lines “I know we’ll meet on God’s Golden Shore.” Approachable vocal writing with a gently flowing piano accompaniment.
