A five-movement work featuring texts by Johannes Kepler, John Donne, and the Psalms. Dedicated to Swiss astrophysicist Arnold Benz, a relative of the composer, this work is based on melodic ideas written to be overlaid with images of various constellations. Duration: 10:00

Morning Train: 1. Going Home on the Morning Train

A haunting setting which is definitely for a reflective, memorial or commemorative type of occasion. The text is by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and is set for SATB chorus (unaccompanied, no divisi.) D minor, slow tempo, sostenuto, frequently changing meters. "So sad, so strange, the days that are no more. Dear as remembered kisses after death." Pianist performs from the piano/choral scores. Variations on Outburst of Spring Triumphant : A Theme of Ludwig Diehn

This work is built on a theme of the late Virginia composer, Ludwig Liehn. Commissioned for the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists, it has six movemements: Intrada (2 versions are printed), Ostinato, Celestes, Aria, Interlude, and Toccata. The first five movements are varied in style and mood. The final movement is a fiery toccata. This accessible and captivating piece has been featured on American Public Media's "Pipedreams" program, and recently received its European premiere at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. American Death Ballads was composed especially for tenor Brian Thorsett. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribedand published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1,2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones.
