I Will Arise comprises vocal lines which may be divided among the chorus according to voice range—with melody, harmony and descant designations. It might be possible to perform this song with either just men or women’s voices, or in any combination, including adding the children. A roughhewn style of singing and playing would be appropriate. Let Us Praise the Lord : Lasset uns den Herren preisen

A soaring, joyful, unaccompanied motet in F major. (Keyboard reduction provided.) Notated on five staves with the soprano 1 and 2 on their own staves. However, all parts below that also divide very occasionally. Reger wrote this as an Easter motet, but it is a stunning piece with a wide dynamic range and many possible uses. Largely homophonic with a few imitative entrances. Duration: 2:00

Instruments, with texts by Madeleine L’Engle, was commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association, Eastern Division. The piece comprises two contrasting movements. “The Sky Is Strung With Glory” is fiery, energetic, and almost manic as the speaker attempts to describe music’s power and control. “Hold Me Against The Dark” is much more subdued and tranquil, featuring lush harmonies as the speaker describes her relationship to the vastness of music. The piece was premiered in 2018 by the ACDA East Honor Choir under the direction of David Fryling, with pianist Timothy Plambeck. Variations on Dona nobis pacem

The singing of Dona nobis pacem is an annual holiday tradition at the Eastman School of Music. I wrote the Variations on Dona nobis pacem to play at a gathering of University of Rochester alumni in November of 2016. In creating a solo piano piece from vocal material, I introduce the tune alone, then its bass, which is similar to that of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Nine variations and a finale follow in a variety of styles that recall Classical and Romantic-period composers. -David Evan Thomas Duration: 6:30

This movement differs from the other three in that it is written for double SATB chorus. But the textures are light and dance-like, perhaps not requiring huge forces. Fred J. Cooper Organ Book : Five Compositions for Organ Solo

Commissioned by the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the Fred J. Cooper Organ Book celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Five Philadelphia area composers were selected to each contribute an accessible brief solo organ work. Each composer was given a general guideline for the style of piece they were to write. The results are nicely varied, with opportunities for colorful registrations. Ogden Nash is often cited as our country’s best-known author of humorous poetry. His style emphasizes unconventional rhyming schemes and invented words, both features of the three poems included in my set “Three Settings of Ogden Nash.” These three poems express a loose narrative of experiences and images from civilized urban and suburban life in mid-century America. “Tin Wedding Whistle,” is a marriage proposal. “Pretty Halcyon Days” is a humorous sketch of a day at the beach. “A Lady Who Thinks She is Thirty” explores the fears of growing old.: the narrator wisely reassures the lady that “beauty is timelessness for you.” To capture this tone musically, I strove to find a stylethat incorporated aspects of popular music, including gentle syncopations and jazz-influenced harmonies, integrated with the conventions of American classical Art Song. -David Conte

Emily! : from New England Musical Settings of the Poems of Emily Dickinson

The poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is especially appealing due to the wide range of topics, diversity of mood and peculiar imagination of the poet. The writings are reflective, passionate, witty, sensuous, observant, and ridiculously humorous. Her heart soars. Her mind pokes fun! Emily was truly a New Englander. Her poems are understated and compact. Her love of Nature focuses on small things- birds, bees, meadows and a pond.In creating the musical settings, the composer (herself a New Englander) endeavored to capture the spirit of the poetry, and of the poet, with songs diverse in style, and concise in form. Everything from romance to frogs is explored,briefly.Great delight is taken in creating musical translations of the colorful imagery: the letters floating off on the breeze ("My Letter to the World"): the shimmering moonlight ("The Moon and the Sea"): a frog croaking in a bog ("The Frog in the Bog"): hopeful birds hopping about ("Hope" with Feathers"): the boat of passion riding the waves and then settling into its mooring ("Passion"): the ship's cannon firing in celebration ("Joy"): and the tiniest, lightest gifts of Nature ("All I Have to Bring"). These are the poet's Letters to the World. She lived as a recluse, yet her words took flight-traveling the universe as messengers of the soul. Duration: 14:00
