Be Thou My Vision: Homage to an Ancient Hymn

The beloved hymn Be Thou My Vision has long been part of our rich musical heritage of hymnody. The text is by St. Dallan Forgaill (6th Century Irish), and the tune is Slane (Traditional Irish) which was added somewhat later to the text. Each verse is set differently, giving variety and expressiveness to the text, which sometimes departs from the original. The composer's intent was an expansive paraphrase of the tune and text, and the result is one of the most rewarding settings of this hymn that you will encounter. Duration: 6:00

Be/dazzled

Be/dazzled, concertino for Electric Violin and Chamber Orchestra, draws its inspiration from the first line of a text that is a paraphrase of the second Logion (sayings attributed to Christ) from the Gospel according to Thomas: "Let him seek and cease not ’til he finds, and when he finds he will be troubled, and when he has been troubled, he shall marvel: and he will reign over the All." The solo violinist is cast as the seeker. The opening cadenza has a searching quality which is developed in a dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra. The ending moves towards the idea of the title: that there is an opening into dazzling brilliance and understanding of the All.

Be Thou My Vision from Three Folk Hymns

Be Thou My Vision has a dimension of an entreaty to the Lord, as if asking for the Lord’s presence to be there at all times. Thus, the phrase “Be Thou” repeats as a background during the singing. Even the opening piano introduction speaks the two-note pattern which will fill the entire song. The men’s and women’s voices are paired in dialogue throughout much of the music. Duration: 4:00

The text is Sir Walter Raleigh's response to The Passionate Shepherd by Christopher Marlowe. The two poems are worlds apart in philosophical viewpoints. The Passionate Shepherd is all about promises, promises, and more promises of constant daily joys in the sharing of love, almost to the point of frenzy. In contrast, The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd is serene and philosophically realistic, yet it seems to yearn for the idealism of the shepherd’s promises. The music is written in both a lighthearted and frenzied manner so as to deliver on the moods of the text. Duration: 3:12 Flute part included.

While Michael Dennis Browne’s text is appropriate for a wedding, it is also too lovely to restrict it to only that purpose. Dedicated to Swiss astrophysicist Arnold Benz, a relative of the composer, the work is based on melodic ideas written to be overlaid with images of various constellations. "The Heavens Declare" is a setting of Psalm 19: 1-4, in which tenor soli and SATB choir alternately declaim the text in a call-and-response structure.
