For his clarinet school he asked for little pieces that would introduce students to the typical innovations of the 1980s in notation (musical processes without bar- lines, asymmetrical repetition, the various means for notating free rhythm). The task continued to interest me, and I increased the number of pieces first to twelve, then to fifteen, so that from the simplest level to the intermediate stage students can find things to play. Letters from X was composed in 1981, Fax from X in 2003, and For 51 to LI in 2009. Not only the instruments but also the performers - all three works are dedicated to Zoltán Gyöngyössy and István Lukácsházi, and they were the first to perform them - connect the three duos, which were composed with rather long intervals between them. Children's Dances

Most of Zoltán Kodály's (1882-1967) pedagogical compositions are written for voices. Some piano collections, which use the black keys of the instrument to draw the attention of music learners to the various possibilities of the pentatonic range, can be regarded as exceptions. The earliest of these is the twelve-piece cycle Children's Dances, which dates back to 1945 and addresses the needs of advanced pianists, not beginners. Its melodies reflect characteristics of Hungarian folk dance tunes, while their setting even evokes the sound of original folk instruments commonly used for accompaniment. Vilmos Bántai and Éva Bántai-Sipos selected eight of the Children's Dances totranscribe for flute and piano. In these transcriptions, recommended for music school students, the original e flat-g flat-a flat-b flat-d flat range is always transposed to easier-to-read keys. In the case of two pieces, two different transpositions (one being very easy to play and the other more difficult) are even offered. The flute is undoubtedly featured as a melodic instrument in these pieces, while the piano sometimes plays a supporting role and other times shares equal status with the flute.

Two Dirges : for soprano and chamber ensemble to poems by Sándor Weöres

Unusual in Maros's ?uvre are Two Dirges (1962?63) for solo soprano and chamber ensemble, as vocal composition was not a central interest of his. This song cycle with instrumental accompaniment comes right before the great stylistic change found in the Euphonies, and sheds sensitive light on the composing directions he was considering. The cycle, set to verses by Sándor Weöres, recalls ancient rituals, whose musical portrayal is helped by arrestingly strong use of percussion to show the primitive side of such music. Meanwhile the vocal line brings out the melodic traits of Hungarian folk song. (Anna Dalos)

The original version of the piece, Message to Frances Marie, op. 31a was composed for cello solo with two bows for the American cellist Frances Marie Uitti. The subtitle refers to the title of a composition by Charles Ives. The condensed piece of Webernian density which is built upon a homogeneous sequence of chords can be played by three different groups of instruments: A: one cello with two bows, two violins and celesta B: two cellos, two violins and celesta C: two organs and celesta (or upright piano). Written in 1989 the premiere of the work was given at the ISCM Festival in Oslo by F.-M. Uitti, Kjell Arne Jörgensen and Eileen Siegtel in September 25,1990.

Imre Mez (born 1932) composed several popular works for children and young people studying music. His most recent collection is extraordinary in that all the 153 tiny pieces are based on the same Hungarian folk song, offering a myriad of ways and options of presenting and elaborating the same melody without altering it. The variations are grouped by key and, within each chapter, are placed in order of difficulty. In so doing, the composer offers, as piano teacher Erika Becht writes, ''two ways for teachers and pupils to know and try out the many musical and technical variations (such as augmenting, diminishing, canon, melody pairs, etc.). This can be done within the same key,in order of difficulty, or by using the scope of the music to find the right degree of difficulty, and advancing through the key signatures, so developing pupils' ability and sense of security in reading a score by playing in various keys.'' This publication is not only recommended to beginners or more advanced pupils undergoing traditional musical tuition, but also to those interested in the secrets of composition and musical structures.

lines, words, letters... to poems by Parti Nagy fo

This composition written in 2002 has five movements (I: a sort of canon, II: interlude 1, III: (hexameter), IV: interlude 2, V: false copy ). Three of the songs composed to verses by Lajos Parti Nagy examine the structure of the texts. The musical structure in the first song is based on a canon that develops from rotating the lines, in the third song it is based on the rhythms created by splitting words and syllables, in the fifth song it is based on the series of sound effects resulting from completely mixing up the individual letters and sounds. The rigorously structured movements consist of short dramatic episodes, each presenting an unusual life situation (interlude 1,interlude 2). The work, commissioned by Judit Rajk, had its premiere in 2006 in Budapest (Palace of Arts, Festival Theatre).
