Marche Funebre

'The Marche funebre is a piano transcription of the concluding part of the symphonic poem Kossuth composed in summer 1903. The snappy rhythmic motif of the dramatic introduction bore the inscription 'Danger threatens the fatherland' in the score. After it, we hear the tragic funeral-verbunk form of the Kossuth theme, over a heroic ostinato accompaniment reminiscent of late Liszt. Contrasting with this, there follows an exciting sequential treatment of the 'valiant heroes' theme, and this peters out to the Hungarian-style runs that had previously appeared in the 'Danger threatens the fatherland' motivic group. Finally, during the resigned conclusion of the piece (X.'A hopeless silence reigns'), the Kossuth theme disintegrates into its various motifs, as if 'dying'.' Kocsár composed the Chaconne for three-part string ensemble in 1996. Originally a popular Baroque musical form, the chaconne is characterized by a set of ground-bass variations. In Kocsár's piece the 23-bar theme is followed by nine variations of diverse characters. The composition lasts about nine minutes and is rounded off with a recapitulation of the theme and a coda.

Variations of a Double

Variations on a Double is a real musical leviathan: almost an hour long, it is a sound-monstrosity that makes exceptional demands of the performers, and is the product of an unusual degree of fusion of the clarinet with the piano. Composed in 2005 for Csaba Klenyán and Gábor Csalog, the work interprets the meaning of the musical “double” in an unconventional way: in it there is not a union of two independent instrumental characters, each with its individual identity - as in a grandiose sonata: instead, its artistic form tends in exactly the opposite direction. A single, monodically conceived unit of musical material passes over and over again through the doubling: they do not formtwo parts, yet do not unite in unison, but present the split face of a single endless - fragmented and episodic - monologue, like Siamese twins. Beware, this is only for the musically mature!

Liebesträume

From 1848 to 1850 Liszt wrote three piano pieces that were published at the end of 1850 under the title Liebesträume - 3 Notturnos. The composition reworks three songs written between 1843 and 1850 which were also published by Kistner in that year. The first two, "Hohe Liebe" and "Gestorben war ich/Seliger Tod," are set to a poem by Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862): a favorite German poet of the 19th century. The third, "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst!" is set to text by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876) who was an active poet and translator. Two earlier versions and a later version of Notturno No. 2 were composed from 1845 to 1846, 1848 to 1849, and 1865 respectively. These variousversions are also included in this edition.

The study analyzes the music of the Hungarian Permanent Army from the early eighteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century. The musical development from the instruments of tunesters is described from the oboists, harmonie, and the seminal appearance of wind band as we know it today. Through the biographical sketches of conductors, descriptions of instruments used in various instrumentations, the role of theuniform unique to each band, and programs of the performed music, the study also describes the function of band music in the cultural life of Hungarian cities during this particular period. This descriptive study is an account of 200 years of Hungarian military music.

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The viola transcriptions follow Bartók's original faithfully.
