British composer Ken Burton was drawn to the poetry of 18th-century slave and writer Phyllis Wheatley for his piece Descend to Earth. The dual troubles of pandemic and racial oppression in 2020 resonate with Wheatley’s concisepoem, the start of which recalls the Christmas/Holiday season. Written for SSAATTBB unaccompanied choir plus baritone solo, Descend to Earth will have a place in many programs with varied themes. It was commissioned by VOCES8 fortheir LIVE From London festival in 2020 and premiered by them with baritone Roderick Williams.

The story was adapted by Jaroslav Kvapil from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and relocated toBohemia, with a Czech water-spirit or Rusalka in the principal role. Rusalka loves a mortal prince, a witch grants her humanity but the romance doesn’t work out and she returns, heartbroken, to the water where she joins herbeloved in death. The Song to the Moon comes from Act I. From her woodland pool, Rusalka sings of her longing in the shimmering moonlight Silver moon upon the deep, dark sky…tell me, tell me, oh where does mylovedone bide?

German composer Carl Stamitz wrote more than 60 concertos for Violin, Viola, Viola d'amore, Cello, Clarinet, Basset Horn, Flute, Bassoon and other instruments. Some of the Clarinet and Viola concertos thatStamitz composed are considered to be among the finest available from the period. Stylistically, Stamitz's music is not too far removed from the works of the young Mozart, or those of Haydn's middleperiod. The Clarinet Concerto No. 3 was likely written around 1785, which was the same year that Stamitz was appointed the lead Violin of the Duc de Noailles in Paris. The style ofthisconcerto reflects the usual orchestration found in the mid-eighteenth century, where most of the important musical material was given to the strings, while the winds were left to fill in the harmony. Carl Stamitz'sstyle is pleasant and free-flowing as nicely illustrated in this concerto.
