Schumann – A Listener's Guide (Book/CD)

Schumann – A Listener's Guide (Book/CD)

Schumann: A Listener's Guide , is an essential portal to the musical works of and tempestuous life of this little-understood genius. Many, if not most, major composers improve over the course of their careers. For Schumann , however, the opposite was true: plagued throughout his life by physical and mental illnesses, he helplessly – and consciously – endured the gradual diminution of his prodigious talent until his premature death at age 46. Throughout Schumann: A Listener's Guide , Lederer provides unflinching critiques of the weaknesses that plagued Schumann's style, contrasting them with the brilliance of his earliest triumphs. This eminently accessible account explores the full spectrum of the master composer's oeuvre, from his popular early music and lieder to his works for chamber ensembles composed in 1842 to his four beloved, if flawed, symphonies. It also accounts for Schumann's dramatic works, particularly Genoveva, his only opera, and Incidental Music to Byron's “Manfred,” a bewilderingly unappreciated musical score. As with all volumes in the UTM series, chumann: A Listener's Guide is accompanied by a CD containing two of the master's most daring imaginative flights, both explored in detail in the text: the Davidsbündlertänze for piano and Dichterliebe (A Poet's Love), one of the all-time greatest song cycles and works for voice. Geared toward fledglings, but written with an eye turned to aficionados, the book is a must-have for Schumann buffs and classical music fans young and old.

The Musician's Guide to Audio

The Musician's Guide to Audio

Everything in the studio starts and ends with audio - both analog and digital - yet many musicians know a lot more about the principles of music than the principles behind audio. The Musician's Guide to Audio will include: - Audio theory - sound waves in the real world - Bit resolution - Sample rates - Distortion - The different types of decibels - The meaning of audio specifications - Frequency response - The different types of distortion - Signal-to-noise ratio - Dynamic range - How the human ear hears sound, and more The book then segues into specifications regarding levels, connection standards (both analog and digital), and resolving potential incompatibilities among differentpieces of gear. Additional topics include information on the practical ramifications of audio, such as the basics of room acoustics, why speaker placement matters, audio distribution methods including data-compressed formats like MP3, the unique constraints of vinyl, and more. Filled with illustrations and featuring selected tech talk sidebars to give details on specific topics for those who want to know why as well as how, The Musician's Guide to Audio fills a unique need by avoiding overly-technical details, and instead emphasizing the practical implications involved in working with audio in the studio. Sibelius: A Comprehensive Guide to Sibelius Music Notation Software

Sibelius: A Comprehensive Guide to Sibelius Music Notation Software

Master Sibelius music notation software step-by-step with the most complete how-to guide available! Designed for both novice and experienced musicians, composers, producers and arrangers, it contains a variety of examples, from single-line melodies to complex scores. Written by two proven experts, trainers and authors in the field of music notation software, this book will be a constant reference for all of your Sibelius questions and needs."A valuable book, encompassing a wide range of musical styles as notational projects.Sibelius software has always included its own excellent manual, so I was intrigued to see just how useful a separate guide could be. This book relates to the latest version, currently Sibelius 6, but much of the material will also be relevant to earlier versions. The volume runs to some 460 pages, but rather than simply cloning the user manual, the authors have constructed a whole series of notational projects introducing different aspects of the software. The writing is engaging throughout, with all points explained clearly, and there is also a companion website offering downloadable files and templates to be used with all the exercises. The book begins with an overview explaining essential procedures, but from Chapter 2 onwards new techniques are introduced through practical tasks, which become more sophisticated throughout the book. Chapter 3, for example, is an exercise in notating Greensleeves, which involves adding lyrics, simple harmonies and chord symbols. There is a chapter explaining using a MIDI keyboard with Sibelius's flexi-time input method, and also one outlining techniques for scanning in music. Later, the book investigates writing for larger ensembles, and there is also a downloadable movie file for use in conjunction with a film scoring project.Overall this is a valuable book, encompassing a wide range of musical styles and offering helpful additional material as you work through. Anyone tackling these projects will undoubtedly achieve an excellent understanding of this vital notational software."     - Tony Cliff - Music Teacher Magazine - August 2011
