The Air Race : A Tribute to KLM's Uiver

In 1934, the city of Melbourne celebrated its centenary and marked the occasion with the MacRobertson International Air Race. KLM’s entry was its first DC-2, PH-AJU ‘Uiver’ (Stork), which took off on 20 October 1934. Shortly before the finish, the plane had to make an emergency landing due to poor weather conditions. The following morning, the entire town turned out to dig the aircraft out of the mud, enabling to resume its flight. Nonetheless, the distance was covered in three days, 18 hours and 17 minutes: a winning performance! This programmatic piece tells the story describing the start of the engines in bar one, the flight over the clouds, the thunderstorm, theemergency landing and many more scenes!

Inspiration for this work was taken from the legend of the "Valley of the Mills", in which a traveller taught songs to the people of a village who had been put under a spell by a monk for their violation of moral standards. He brought song and prosperity back to the valley. It is this enchanting story, which shows the positive power of music, that Thomas Doss used as the basis for this splendid concert work which will be loved by all who perform it and listen to it.

Kick It! : The Ultimate Way of Getting the Groove for Drummers

Kick-it! is a whole new concept in learning to play the drum set. The interaction between drummer and bass is fundamental to every good band, as can be heard on CD 1. You can only practise this if you have the opportunity to play alongside a bass player, and, naturally this opportunity is not always available. But it is with Kick-it! Not only can you play along with the fantastic live band on CD 2, but you also get to use the additional bass versions of all the pieces. That’s how you get the groove!

It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

The Semmering Pass, also known as Zauberberg, is a mountain pass in Eastern Austria, which forms a natural border between Lower Austria and Styria. The pass was historically established as a major transport route south from Vienna, with a mountain railway built between 1848 and 1854. This programmatic piece of music tells the story of the railway from its conception up to the historic point where the first train makes its journey through the pass.
