Light at the End of the Tunnel

Commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for the Postcards from Composers series in 2020. Written during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, the solo viola reacts to the journey through life during the pandemic with despair and agitation, seekingthe "light at the end of the tunnel" - a quiet long-held high E natural. Eventually the agitation calms as the E natural resolves to A major, looking to a future of hope.

Sing to me, windchimes

Sing to me, windchimes was commissioned by Louth Choral Society in 2017 following a bequest made by Gill Fraser, member of the Choir from 2001 - 2014. It was first performed by Louth Choral Society in St James’s Church, Louth,Lincolnshire, on Sunday 22 April 2018, conducted by Owain Park and accompanied by David Parker. The work sets text by Lyva Marty, A. E. Housman, Stella Benson, Alice Meynell and Sara Teasdale.

O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth

A setting after Psalm 21 for mixed voices and organ accompaniment. For non-Commonwealth choirs, the text can be changed to ‘O Lord, may thy servant sovereign Lord’. The work was written for Matthew Owens and the choir of Wells Cathedral.

The Unicorns

Study score of The Unicorns orchestral suite. In 1967 Peter Dickinson commissioned an opera libretto from the distinguished poet John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006). The opera was never completed but, in 1980, when Dickinson wascommissioned to write a work for Elisabeth Söderström and Solna Brass of Sweden, he turned back to the sketches and developed a six-movement suite which was premiered in Stockholm on 31 October 1982 and recorded shortlyafterwards. The story tells of two unicorns discovered in a remote part of Africa.

Night Prayer

Night Prayer was written by Owain Park during Covid-19 isolation, and is designed to be performed by singers brought together from afar. The music is based on the ancient chant, Te lucis ante terminum (Before the ending of theday), with the melodies set against gently hummed textures and slow-moving harmonies.

Missa Speravimus

Co-commissioned by the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy and by Edward and Sarah Armitage to commemorate their 20th wedding anniversary. This Missa Brevis (‘short mass’) was written at the request of Mr and Mrs Edward Armitage and the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy. The four movements are based on a single six-note phrase taken from the plainsong Te Deum laudamus (tonus simplex) bearing the text ‘Speravimus in te’. This motif repeats many times in the chant but these words are used for its final appearance, ending the phrase ‘O Lord, let thy mercy be upon us, as we have hoped in thee'. This miniature cell is used to create musical material in a variety of ways: inversion, retrograde inversion, augmentation, all these in combination, etc. It is also employed as a device to form the principal harmonic flavour. The Mass is designed for both liturgical and concert use. The Kyrie alludes to the Speravimus motif, with the Gloria more strictly developing its possibilities. The Sanctus and Agnus reuse and develop material from the Gloria and it is hoped, therefore, that the piece will be easily learned, practical and useful for regular performance.

Setting the text of Thomas Allain (after Song of Songs), this work is scored for unaccompanied SATB choir. A perfect anthem for a wedding ceremony.

Anthem - To St Cecilia

A work for SATB choir and organ setting an excerpt from Ode for Music on Saint Cecilia’s Day by Alexander Pope. It was first performed as part of the Festival of St Cecilia 2018 at St Paul’s Cathedral, London on 21 November 2018, by the combined choirs of Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral.

In the midst of thy temple

This six-minute anthem by Matthew Martin was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster for a service held on 15th October 2019 to mark the 750th anniversary of the dedication of the Abbey Church of Henry III and firstperformed by the Choir of Westminster Abbey conducted by James O’Donnell with Peter Holder (organ). The piece sets Latin and English text the Angularis fundamentum (Christ is the sure foundation) (Anon 7th century), translatedby. John Mason Neale (1818 1866) / Joseph Armitage Robinson (1858 1933), Dean of Westminster 1902 11. The work is scored for mixed choir with divisi, and the organ part is typical of Martin’s inimitable style.

First performed in 1994 by Cirencester Parish Church and published here for the first time, this is a setting of text taken from the Psalms, scored for mixed voices with organ accompaniment

Ode to Joy

By The River

A setting of the final stanza of By the River by the New Zealand poet Mary Ursula Bethell. The river’s flow, which is used as a metaphor for life’s journey, is echoed in the music’s gently swirling contrapuntal lines which buildsteadily towards the work’s climax.

The Wells Responses

‘The Wells Reponses’ for upper voices and organ accompaniment were first performed at Choral Evensong during the new music wells 68-08 festival on Friday 13th June 2008, by the Girl Choristers of Wells Cathedral, with Samuel Hudson, organ, conducted by the Organist & Master of the Choristers, Matthew Owens.

Euphonium Concerto

The work, written for David Childs, is inspired by a Gaelic poem about lost love, telling the tale of a fisherman and his wife. She accompanies her love to the shores of the sea to wave him off: but tragically he never returns. Each day she returns to the sea and sings to him, but no answer ever comes. In the tradition of Celtic song, it is dark and full of passion and pain.

The Harfleur Song

The score from Paul Harvey's work for Saxophone Quartet as recorded by the London Saxophone Quartet and Saxology.

Requiem 'The Souls of the Righteous' (Full Score)

Study score. First performed on 22 September 2018 at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh by the National Youth Choir of Scotland and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Bell.

Moore'S Song To Music

The Silent Road

The Silent Road, for SATB choir and piano accompaniment, was commissioned by Choirs of America, Geoffrey McQueen, Executive Director and Christopher Olin, Artistic Director. It was premiered at the Nationals for Top Choirs in Carnegie Hall, March 23rd, 2018. The poem is by Wilson L. Johnson, an old American friend of the composer’s grandfather who died during WWII.
