Joining religious orders does not require a habit, as these organizations also offer positions for lay people. Membership provides bonuses to piety, but also results in certain obligations. Joining secret cults is much more risky, but has the potential to be highly profitable. Within each group, characters get the ability to climb the ranks of the organization, which allows them to unlock new skills and activate new chains of events. In addition, the DLC has an option to organize hunting for heretics, allowing you to send a chaplain on a mission to destroy groups that undermine our authority and the Church. The expansion also introduces new types of assassins and allows you to finance archaeological expeditions in search of treasures and holy relics.
