Advanced Techniques Fingerpicking Guitar : Level 3

This lesson is intended for advanced players looking for ways to voice chords and arrange tunes in ways that sound rich and complex but feel nimble under the hands. We’ll look mostly at arrangements I’ve made of blues and fiddle melodies, and also look at the playing of the remarkable Johnny St. Cyr. We begin our lesson with Ma Rainey’s Yonder Comes The Blues. This is followed by Jelly Roll Morton’s Jelly Roll Blues. Composed in 1915 and was one of the first published jazz compositions. Johnny St. Cyr was a famous New Orleans musician who played both guitar and the sixstring banjo. He recorded with Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven bands. He also played with Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers. His Guitar Blues is a tour-de-force and challenge for any fingerstyle guitarist. We finish our lesson with the Mineola Rag first recorded by the East Texas Serenaders.

Movable Shapes in Fingerpicking Guitar : Level 2/3

This lesson is intended for players who are seeking a greater understanding of how to get beyond basic open chords, or first position, use the full fretboard. We will do so by understanding the concept of a movable shape. The tunes selected will slowly introduce you to a variety shapes commonly used by the old-time masters to unlock the neck. In addition to learning these examples, I’ll talk about the logic that makes movable shapes work, empowering you to create your own uses for them. You will learn tunes that have become standards in the fingerstyle repertoire by Sam McGee, Big Bill Broonzy and Maybelle Carter. As well, I teach two arrangements I have put together of an old-time fiddle tune and a Jelly Roll Morton piano blues.

In these lessons for the intermediate fingerstyle guitarist Dave Van Ronk presents his arrangements of blues and a classic rag. The book includes a conversation with Dave, a discography, 6 tunes in notation and tablature, and 3 CDs teaching each tune phrase by phrase. LESSON ONE: A blues in 12/8 with Leroy Carr's Midnight Hour Blues. Blood Red Moon follows played in a dropped D tuning. The lesson ends with Blind Lemon Jefferson's One Kind Favor. LESSON TWO: Sunday Street is an original Dave Van Ronk song and is an excellent example of Dave's arranging skills. Four choruses are taught demonstrating how this tune can develop. Bessie Smith's classic blues You've Been A Good Old Wagon is taught in the key of E. LESSON THREE: Dave's arrangement of St. Louis Tickle was the first great challenge for fingerpickers interested in classic ragtime. This four sectioned rag is played in the keys of C and F. Ragtime Guitar

This is a challenging set of three lessons presenting a variety of tunes from string band rags to classic rags to novelty instrumentals. The three audio CDs give 3 full hours of note-by-note, phrase-by-phrase instruction. LESSON ONE: Two New Orleans standards are presented in this lesson. Both are played in the key of C with a style that combines an alternating bass with single-string runs and counterpoint lines. Mabel's Dream was popularized by the King Oliver Band. High Society is a well known Mardi Gras instrumental. LESSON TWO: Two rags are presented in this lesson. We begin in a dropped D tuning with the classic rag Powder Rag. This is followed by an arrangement of the 1928 Dallas String Band recording of Dallas Rag. This combines alternating bass with counterpoint techniques and single-string runs. LESSON THREE: One of Rev. Davis's most popular show instrumentals was Soldier's March. It has sections played in the keys of F and C and is a challenging guitar solo that takes the listener from early morning to lights out in the day of a soldier.
