John Miller: Jackson Blues Guitar DVD

John Miller: Jackson Blues Guitar DVD

Jackson, Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910-1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson, which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city, held forth the promise of more and better work opportunities, and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton. The Jackson Blues scene was an unusually rich one, stylistically, spanning the gap from the sophisticated Pop blues of Bo Carter to the low-down blues of Rube Lacy and a host of players working between those two extremes.Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from Tommy Johnson, one of the fountainheads of the Mississippi blues, Itta Bena natives Rube Lacy and Ishmon Bracey, with their distinctive vocal head tones and intense playing, the great Geeshie Wiley, a woman who played and sang as strongly as any man, Walter Vinson, guitarist and lead singer for the Mississippi Sheiks, and Bo Carter, a player with a rich chordal vocabulary and Jazzy sound. The songs presented offer a wide range of left and right hand approaches and ways of keeping time and will expand your your ability to play blues, moving far afield from the simple alternating bass.A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs' lyrics as well as transcriptions of the Guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken.Titles include: Tommy Johnson: Lonesome Home Blues | Walter Vinson: Overtime Blues | Geeshie Wiley: Eagles On A Half | Rube Lacy: Ham Hound Crave | Ishmon Bracey: Four Day Blues | Bo Carter: Honey

Rick Udler: The Brazilian Sound for Fingerstyle Guitar

Rick Udler: The Brazilian Sound for Fingerstyle Guitar

Brazil has produced some of the most vibrant and exciting guitar music in the instrument's history. In this lesson, Rick Udler discusses and demonstrates styles, techniques, and rhythms of Brazil's great players. This is a unique opportunity for guitarists to delve into the beautiful sounds of this musical land. Rick begins by going over chords that are commonly used by Brazilian guitarists. He then teaches the accompaniment to singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil's beautiful composition, "A Paz", to illustrate the use of chords with open strings. A step-by-step analysis of Bossa Nova accompaniment in the João Gilberto style follows along with suggestions on how to develop a better feel for this sophisticated, syncopated groove. The solo guitar rendition of the Antonio Carlos Jobim/Newton Mendonça classic "One Note Samba" will be a welcome addition to many players repertoires with it's rhythmic drive and rich harmony. Samba rhythms are then explored with examples that are sure to enhance one's groove and arsenal of techniques. Rick also gives examples of inner string movement which will prove invaluable to those looking for ways to generate more excitement and authenticity in their comping. A sambified version of "Happy Birthday" demonstrates how to apply these techniques to a familiar tune and make it sound fresh. And, to provide an even greater challenge for all players, Rick gives a detailed analysis of his tour de force solo guitar piece "Amigo Paulo", composed as an homage to his friend, guitar legend Paulinho Nogueira (1927-2003). This tune with it's choro influences incorporates many of the techniques Rick learned directly from the master and is sure to provide much musical food for thought for players who are looking for innovative new colours and textures to add to their playing.

Eric Bibb: Guitar Artistry

Eric Bibb: Guitar Artistry

Eric Bibb was raised in the folk tradition, the son of the folk singer Leon Bibb. Bibb?s uncle was the world-famous jazz pianist and composer, John Lewis, part of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Bibb was raised in a music-filled household, as family friends in the 1950s and 1960s included Pete Seeger, Odetta, Bob Dylan, and the late Paul Robeson, who was named Eric?s godfather. Bibb got his first steel guitar at age seven, and he got some advice from Dylan that he never forgot, to ?keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff.? When he was 16, his father asked him to play guitar in the house band for his TV talent show, Someone New.In 1970, Eric left New York City for Paris, where he met with guitarist Mickey Baker. There he began to focus on blues guitar and after moving to Stockholm, he became enamored with prewar blues. A breakout performance at the 1996 London Blues Festival catapulted Eric to a higher level of visibility. Since then he has toured the world, performing at concert halls and major festivals. He has toured with Robert Cray, Keb Mo, Corey Harris and even opened shows for Ray Charles.Eric earned a Grammy nomination for his collaboration (with Taj Mahal and others) on the children?s record, SHAKIN? A TAILFEATHER. His album PAINTING SIGNS was recognized by New Age Voice as a Finalist for Best Folk Album of 2001. He joined Maria Muldaur and Rory Block to record the gospelflavored SISTERS & BROTHERS, and then released FRIENDS, a collection of duets with Taj Mahal, Odetta, and others. He has been nominated for many W.C. Handy Awards in a variety of categories. Eric?s rich and sensitive vocals and lyrics provide a perfect balance to his fine fingerpicking technique. Purveying a beautifully realized and deftly accomplished soulful folk-blues, Eric has no problem blending various genres effortlessly, melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle, contemporary sensibility.

The Country Blues guitar duet tradition is rich and varied, but it has been relatively unexplored by present day blues players. This is a shame for a couple of reasons ? there are a lot of great duets that merit being worked out and played for today's audiences, preserving the music, but there's also just the sheer enjoyment and fun involved in playing this music with a kindred spirit, someone who hears and responds to this music as you do yourself. In Legendary Country Blues Duets, Frank and John have selected some of the really prime guitar duets in the Country Blues tradition to teach you. The songs they've chosen for the lesson have been picked to provide you with a variety of different duet approaches, sounds and techniques. You can choose to learn one or the other of the parts, or learn both parts and teach one to a friend. There is a richness in shared musical performance that is yours for the taking here. Country Blues Guitar in Spanish & Vestapol Tunings

Country Blues Guitar in Spanish & Vestapol Tunings

The use of open tunings on the guitar to accompany singing is one of the hallmark sounds of the Country Blues. Unquestionably, the two open tunings that have been used most commonly in the Country Blues have been Spanish tuning, often called Open G tuning and Vestapol tuning, quite often called Open D tuning. For this 2-DVD lesson, we've chosen the names Spanish and Vestapol to designate these tunings, because in practice, Spanish tuning was not always tuned exactly to an open G chord and Vestapol tuning was not always tuned to an open D chord. Each one of these tunings represents its own sort of sound universe, but what is really interesting to hear is the different approaches that different players took to the same tunings, and the different sounds that resulted. In each of these tunings, you'll encounter players whose approach was so melody-driven that it ends up sounding almost like slide guitar played without a slide, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, high concept, chordally sophisticated arrangements. We've purposely chosen the songs that are taught on the lesson to encompass as much of that sound spectrum as possible. On Disc 1, the Spanish tuning lesson, we start by presenting an overview to the tuning, how it is set up, and where the foundational chord positions needed to play Country Blues in that tuning are located. Then we launch into the repertoire: Elizabeth Cotten's serene rendition of the hymn When I Get Home, Mississippi John Hurt's danceable Boys, You're Welcome, Teddy Darby's hypnotic Built Right On The Ground, Clifford Gibson's uptown Bad Luck Dice, Mance Lipscomb's ancient-sounding Willie Poor Boy and Kenny Baker's haunting Legend of the Whistling Brakeman. On Disc 2, the Vestapol tuning lesson, we begin with the an overview that provides the sound of the tuning, the approach that is best suited to it, and the chordal positions needed to play Country Blues in it. Then we go to the songs: Tarheel Slim's instrumental No Time At All, Jimmy Lee Williams' churning locomotive Have You Ever Seen Peaches?, John Byrd's Old Timbrook Blues, Memphis Willie B.'s eerie Brownsville Blues, Blind Boy Fuller's driving Little Woman You're So Sweet, and Jesse Thomas' mind-bender Another Friend Like Me.Instruction is offered with the kind of patient attention to detail for which John Miller's lessons have been acclaimed, and all of the original performances of the songs are included on the discs, as well as tab and standard notation and the lyrics to the songs. Learn the songs on these lessons and you'll be equipped not only to continue learning more songs in these tunings on your own, but perhaps even to create your own arrangements and songs in the tunings.

The Guitar Artistry Of Chris Proctor - Morning Thunder

The Guitar Artistry Of Chris Proctor - Morning Thunder

In The Guitar Artistry Of Chris Proctor the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship winner talks about his style and influences as well as giving dazzling performances on both 6- and 12- string guitars.Chris Proctor falls squarely into the ?New World? steel-string guitar style. Beginning with pop and rock music, Chris was soon drawn to the country blues. After exploring that tradition, he studied classical and jazz music, the traditional music of the British Isles, bluegrass and old-time Appalachian music, and, finally, began to investigate the world of the 12-string guitar. In 1982, Chris won the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship and released his first recording, ?Runoff.? That recording, and the 8 that followed on the Flying Fish, Rounder, Windham Hill and Sugarhouse labels over the next 27 years, elevated Chris to the top rank in the steel-string world. Chris also wrote articles and books, filmed instructional videos of his transcriptions and techniques, created the guitar workshop program for Taylor Guitars, and designed the Taylor Chris Proctor Signature Model guitar.Beginning in the year 2000, Chris broadened his original focus on new music to include reinterpreting music of his diverse set of original influences. His performances today are a primer on the acoustic guitar music of the ?New World.? They feature original guitar techniques and devices invented and adapted by Chris, and they convey a striking array of tones, textures and moods.Titles include: Tap Room, Hot Spot, War Games, Ozymandias, Beppe, Ladybug Stomp, Nights in White Satin, Bach to Ireland, Late Again, Interstate, Morning Thunder, The Last Steam Engine Train, Revisiting the Sailor?s Grave, Gecko Drive and Medley:A Scarce O? Tatties/The Lyndhurst Jig    Review: Watching Taylor fingerstylist and original workshop clinician Chris Proctor in his new DVD Morning Thunder is an enlightening exercise. Proctor has always been an intrepid guitar explorer, and his expansive approach to guitar composition and playing is likely to leave your head percolating with fresh ideas to apply to your own fretboard excursions.    In the DVD, released through Stefan Grossman?s Vestapol Videos (www.guitarvideos.com) as part of Grossman?s ?Guitar Artistry? series, Proctor intersperses solo performances, played on his signature model rosewood Grand Concert and maple 12-string, with interview segments as he shares his influences and evolutionary steps as a player. He talks about the merits of composing with one?s head versus one?s hands, explains his approach to arranging and interpreting, and highlights the tools he uses to bring new textures to the acoustic guitar, like partial capos, the EBow, and alternate tunings.    Proctor?s rich aptitude for so many different styles of music, from blues and traditional Celtic to classical and jazz, inform his ?New World? approach, which synthesize different idioms in fresh ways, much like fingerstyle mavericks Leo Kottke and John Fahey, both of whom are significant influences. The DVD performances include a sweet version of Kottke?s ?Revisiting the Sailor?s Grace? and Fahey?s ?The Last Steam Engine Train,? along with Celtic medleys and Proctor?s original compositions, including the new tune ?Gecko Drive.?    Though the DVD doesn?t adhere to a traditional-style instr
