Eric Wetherell: Bristol Quay Suite for String Orchestra

A magnificent suite, written in 1987 by Eric Wetherell, for String Orchestra. The first movement is based on the sea shanty Santiano, hinting at the danger as well as the romance of life at sea. The second is a gentle waltz; perhaps the eighteenth century sailor, putting into port, found an opportunity to show his gentler side. The Polish folk-song River Wisla is the theme of the third movement, and the finale is a fast 6/8 firmly rooted in the English musical tradition.

Two SATB arrangements of Pieds En L'Air from Warlock's Capriol, the first being a slumersome lullaby, and the second an optimistic springtime song.Tomlinson's first arrangement, Hush My Child, was intended to take advantage of Warlock's sumptuous harmonies in the original string orchestra version of Pieds En L'Air, but with voices. This setting was then shown to John Bishop, who responded by creating the text Welcome The Spring to provide a more optimistic and forward-looking interpretation of the same piece.Both versions are featured in this edition, leaving the choice to the singers and choral leaders themselves!

Venetian Songs Op.22 is a cycle of four songs for High Voice and Piano by Ian Venables, setting the inspiring texts of John Addington Symonds.Venables has allowed the texts of Symonds' poetry to guide these sensitive settings, rich in musical imagery to illuminate the words. The music moves between moments of intense anguish and despair to expressions of pure beauty and allusions to the delicacy of nature.The cycle received its first performance in March 1995 at Clifton Hill House, Bristol - formerly the Symonds' family home and now Bristol University's principal Halls Of Residence. The performance was organised as part of the formal celebrations marking the opening of the Gothic Library.

This society edition contains fifteen songs, chronologically arranged and each with a detailed preface giving the relevant historical background to the composition. Warlock was very pedantic about original keys. He deplored transpositions but bowed to their necessity in performing editions. In this edition keys have been chosen to suit the medium voice. This generally means a range of about an octave and a fifth, with nothing below B flat and nothing above F sharp/G flat.
