Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I. GANDALF (The Wizard) II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) III. GOLLUM (Sméagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moria b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm V. HOBBITS (all movements available separately AM 01-010 ... AM 05-010)The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988,performed by the “Groot Harmonie-orkest van de Gidsen” under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, The Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.Empire of Light is also based on a work by René Magritte. He was a versatile and productive artist producing over 1100 paintings and 700 gouaches. Johan de Meij used the painting Empire of Light as his theme for the last movement of his Venetian Collection.

The Makropulos Affair : Opera in three Acts, Brno Version

The new edition of Janácek’s penultimate opera “The Makropulos Affair” is a reconstruction of the work’s original version, which shows only a few deviations from the final version. The opera was premiered on 18 December 1926 at the National Theatre Brno with the composer in attendance. The second authorized copy of the score, prepared by Jaroslav Kulhánek, was used for the performance material. This copy also served as the primary source for the new critical edition of the full score. This edition features clearly marked performance instructions by one of the editors, the experienced Janácek conductor Tomáš Hanus. As they have been graphically offset, they can easily be distinguished from the original version.These practical suggestions facilitate the production of the opera and allow the conductor to study the work more easily. In this way, the performance material offers a welcome alternative to previous editions of the opera.

Leos Janácek began composing his seventh opera, “The Cunning Little Vixen”, based on the popular feuilletons of Rudolf Tesnohlídek, in January 1922. The first copy of the score, since lost, was completed by Václav Sedlácek inOctober 1923, while the second copy was prepared by Jaroslav Kulhánek in January 1924. The world premiere took place on 6 November 1924 under the direction of Ota Zítek and was conducted by Frantisek Neumann. The vocal score waspublished in Czech before the event and then again in 1925 along with the German translation by Max Brod, which is something of a separate version of the text in its own right.This volume of the complete edition reprints thecritical edition by Jirí Zahrádka, which was published by Universal Edition in 2010. The present edition newly includes transcriptions of the libretto in three languages (Cz/Eng/Ger) and a detailed Critical Report (Eng). Theedition draws on all extant sources and – in consideration of Janácek’s active participation in rehearsals for the premiere production – integrates both the dynamics of František Neumann and the performance markings of Sir CharlesMackerras into the musical text.This is the third opera to be published in the complete edition, following “Fate” and “The Makropulos Affair”.
