Fair Field Festival opens with a brass fanfare under florid woodwind figuration. A noble chorale leads to a lively allegro vivo, which centres around a majestic horn and euphonium melody under chattering woodwinds. A second theme is first stated by trumpets and this leads to a central legato theme on horns and saxes, repeated by the trumpets. A brief allusion to the opening section leads to a full recapitulation and an energetic coda. A work filled with vitality!

Brave : Soundtrack Highlights

Patrick Doyle, who has already been nominated for an Oscar and two Golden Globes for is fabulous film music, created the soundtrack for the Disney/Pixar film BRAVE. The Brit, Philip Sparke, was inspired by the sometimes powerful, other times lyricaland in part celtic-flavoured melodies to put together a stylish medley for concert band, in which the following tunes appear: FATE AND DESTINY, THE GAMES, MERIDAS HOME, NOBLE MAIDEN FAIR (A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal) and TOUCH THE SKY.

Town of the Seven Hills : Suite for Concert Band

This 4-movement suite tells the story of the beautiful French town ‘Tulle’ that was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon. The composer depicts the history of the town, as well as important events such as the bloodbath during World War II, the fabric ‘tulle’ after which the town is named and the festive annual fair. Since Tulle is also known for the production of accordions, the composer added an ‘ad libitum’ accordion part. A really charming and stylish concert or contest work!

Richard Rodgers Collection

Richard Charles Rodgers was one of Americas best-known musicaltheatre composers. In his lifetime Rodgers wrote hundreds of songsand no less than forty Broadway musicals including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Pacific and Carousel, many of which are still loved and regularly performed today. In this wonderful collection, Peter Kleine Schaars used the songs It Might As Well Be Spring from State Fair, My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music and The Lady Is a Tramp from Babes in Arms. Add a little Broadway sparkle to any concert with this catchy item.

Johannes-Passion (St. John Passion) BWV 245

The St. John Passion was first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday of 1724. Written three years before the St. Matthew Passion, it was a work Bach revised during the rest of his life, in fact he didnot leave us a definitive version either in print or fair copy. The sources give evidence of four different versions used at four performances - 1724, 1725, around 1730 and during the last years of Bach's life. They oftencontain two or more readings for the same passage, or even different movements that on different occasions occupied the same place in the work.Barenreiter's edition uses the final version IV as its basis withalternativemovements and readings contained in the appendices. Sonata For Two Pianos And Percussion : Facsimile Of The Draft Score and Paul Sacher'S Annotated Full Score Copy

Béla Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, composed in summer 1937 on a commission from Paul Sacher and premièred in Basel in January 1938, is incontestably one of the supreme creations of modernmusic. This publication, with introductory essays by Felix Meyer, Robert W. Wason, Lászlo Vikárius, and Wolfgang Rathert, presents two major handwritten sources for this work from the holdings of the PaulSacher Foundation: the draft score, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the sonata's genesis, and a 'whiteprint' of the fair copy, which contains additions from Bartók and differs substantially from thedefinitiveversion at the end of the development section in movement 1. The volume also contains, on an enclosed CD, the radio recording of 1940, with Bartók and his wife Ditta Pásztory on the piano parts, aswell as a new recording of the sonata in its 'original' form, played by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo with percussionists Matthias Würsch and Christian Dierstein.

Town of the Seven Hills : Suite for Brass Ensemble and Percussion

This suite tells the story of the French town ‘Tulle’ in the ‘Nouvelle-Aquitaine’. Tulle was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon, and is beautifully situated on the river Corrèze. The first movement opens with a stately introduction, which is followed by a historic march through the streets of Tulle. We pass Notre Dame cathedral and the characteristic houses from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, i.e. the ‘Maison de Loyac’. Tulle was once the centre of the production of ‘tulle’, a net-like fabric that is named after this town. This is what the second movement is all about, and at certain moments the music sounds very graceful because tulle is often used as a material for ballet skirts and wedding dresses. The third movement was written to commemorate the blood bath of Tulle in June 1944. During a retaliatory action by the German SS, a large number of Tulle’s citizens were killed. The emotions expressed here are a combination of grief and comfort. In the last movement, the festive sounds of the annual fair held in May on the ‘Champs de Mars’ and the ‘Place de la Cathédrale’, can be heard.
