The Red Tower : Based on the painting by Giorgio de Chirico (1888-

The 2nd movement of The Venetian Collection refers to a painting by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was commissioned by the Banda Civica di Soncino [Italy]. One of the main towers of the ancient walls that surround themedieval town of Soncino, La rocca sforzesca, has a significant resemblance with the tower on De Chirico's painting. De Meij has constructed an exciting and warm-blooded work, based on a simple four-note motif, with lyric solopassages for bassoon, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone in the middle section. In November of 2000, THE RED TOWER was awarded 1st Prize in the International Composition Competition of OMAN. (Duration 8:30)

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a song by The Beatles from their 1968 album The Beatles (often called the ‘White Album’). Although credited to Lennon McCartney, the song was written solely by Paul McCartney. The tag line “ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goeson, brah” was an expression used by Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, an acquaintance of McCartney. This high profi le ‘New Sounds’ arrangement by Toshio Mashima is perfect to use as an encore for your next concert!

The Red Tower : Based on the painting by Giorgio de Chirico

The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaeval walls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico.

In 1786, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozzi di Figaro. In the opera Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiancée of Figaro, his valet. Eventually, through four acts full of complicated intrigue, he is outwitted. In his music, Mozart, at times in a humorous way, reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfully anticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by the Japanese composer Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this enchanting music.

Mundus Novus (‘New World’) is a travelogue in the form of letters sent by the sailor and explorer Amerigo Vespucci in 1502 to the Florentine nobleman Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco di Medici. Vespucci is credited with four journeys to America, eventually leading to Martin Waldseemüller’s map ‘Cosmographiae Introductio' in which the name ‘America’ first appeared.
