The Victoria Peak

Every December, the Winter Band Festival is held at the Disneyland resort in Hong Kong where bands from various Asian countries perform and enjoy an international atmosphere. The Victoria Peak , a concert march by Satoshi Yagisawa - a popular composer in Asian countries and beyond - was commissioned for the festival in 2013. This bright, colourful work is ideal as an opening piece for your concert and will undoubtedly enchant wind music fans around the world!

Golden Peak is a concert piece that takes us deep into the world of volcanoes of the Auvergne in central France. They are dormant volcanoes whose origins date back from 7,000 to over 65 million years ago. Among the most well-known are the 80 volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys, a spectacular natural environment ranking among the most fascinating landscapes in the world. The title of this dynamic and rhythmic piece is a reference to the local spa town of Mont-Dore and calls upon all sections of the orchestra. Robert Longfield: Rondo In Blue

Combining elements of the blues, rondo form, and a driving 7/8 meter, this energetic work from Robert Longfield makes use of classical and jazz figures. The 7/8 meter is very intuitive and provides a rhythmic pulse throughout the piece. A swing section toward the end is an excellent teaching tool and will surely delight both your students and audience.

Elliot Del Borgo: Phantom Ship

Written in a D minor/modal tonality, this work quickly moves from a singing style of 84 beats per minute, to a moving 138. The meter is 3/4 throughout with all the instrumental ranges very modest.

Tirana

Commissioned by the Minnesota Chapter of the College Band Directors National Association, this piece is a captivating series of lively dances, introduced and interrupted by short fanfares to create bursts of sound throughout. The complex meter patterns and exotic scales give the work a Southeast-European flavor that is a delight to perform.

Bellum et Pax

Bellum et Pax is a composition describing the two ancient concepts of ‘war’ and ‘peace.’ While this piece appears to be one single movement, it consists of four sections that flow into one another. Mysterious and threatening tones lead the way into an epic battle between the chaos of war and enlightenment of peace. Peace triumphs, but menacing bass notes at the end symbolize the constant presence and threat of war and violence in the world.

Northwest Saga

The opening theme portrays the beauty and grandeur of the Pacific Northwest, with its majestic mountains, verdant forests, sparkling lakes and rivers that flow to the sea. To depict the lives and times of the courageous pioneers and rugged lumberjacks who helped cut a swathe into this territory by way of the Oregon Trail and other routes, three regional popular tunes of the period have been used: To the West, The Timbertown Logger, and Once More A-Lumb'ring Go.

Enchanted Spaces

The Decorah (IA) High School Wind Ensemble commissioned Enchanted Spaces to both capture the magic of their “enchanted” city, and to be very playable at the high school level. A sparkling, full ensemble entrancegives way to musical paintings of vast spaces and natural beauty. The ebb and flow between grand sounds and lush charm perfectly balance this shimmering composition. This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme.

Dancescriptions combines many styles derived from pop music with techniques from classical composition. The styles are not the focal point - the true musical definition comes from the interpretation of the transition passages.After the statement of a rhythmic and melodic cell the music is developed from the thematic material in the appropriate style - soul music, disco, merengue, ballad and rock - in the Big Band tradition. The different rhythms andgenres are interwoven and combined to create a natural flow in this musical puzzle.

The White Stone

The White Stone was commissioned by the band of the catholic parish of Dossenheim on the occasion of the 1250th anniversary of the town of Dossenheim near Heidelberg, Germany. The work is named after a high peak (White Stone) in the east of the town. Throughout the piece the composer uses the tune ‘How lovely you are, my Dossenheim’ in different forms and shapes, and musically he depicts the history and landscapes of this idyllic town. A challenging and versatile concert work with lots of beautiful melodies as well as rhythmical and energetic sequences.

Klezmer Classics : for wind orchestra

Klezmer is the traditional instrumental music for weddings and parties of the Yiddish speaking Jews of Eastern Europe. Its origin goes back to the sixteenth century. At this time Yiddish culture was at its peak in the countries where the Jews then lived: Poland, Ukraine, Byelorussia (White Russia), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary. In recent years there has been a revival in popularity of this style of music and it is often played outside of its traditional context. Johan de Meij has arranged five classics from the Klezmer repertoire into a colourful selection for concert band.

Pomp and Circumstance Op. 39 : March No. 3 in C minor

The English composer Sir Edward Elgar wrote the five Pomp and Circumstance marches between 1901 and 1930, the time of the British Empire, when the colonial and strategic world power of England was at its peak. March No. 3 in C minor, although less well-known then March No.1, was regarded by the composer as the most successful of the marches in terms of composition technique and musical content. The dark colours of the minor tonality and the hopeful sounding cantabile theme are extremely impressive, giving the march its unique character. This is a great chance to bring British pomp andsplendour to your performance.
