Homage : Guardians of the Sea

This work was commissioned by the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force Band, based at Kure City, Hiroshima, Japan, to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The composer used a passage from Kosaku Yamada’s Umi No Sakimori (Sakimori of the Sea), ceremonial music of the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The result is Homage, expressing Yagisawa’s respect for Yamada and his work—a tribute to a composer whose legacy includes a large number of Japanese songs.

Serpent Sea : 4th Movement of The Seas of the Moon

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50

Jacob De Haan: Sea Of Hope (Score/Parts)

Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed by optimism and celebration in the closing bars.

Includes: Song of the High Seas, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, Bewitched, The Carousel Waltzand Climb Ev'ry Mountain. A marvelous tribute to one of the masters of melody.

Since the beginning of mankind people have realized that the warmth and the light of the sun were necessary to develop life on earth - by creating winds in the air, by generating rains through the evaporation of sea water and by allowing plants to grow. The sun creates the dynamism of the chain of life. This is the reason why ancient populations adored the sun as the god of cosmic order as opposed to the god of chaos or night, who generated fear and the necessity of defense. This piece is a tribute to the sun (Verso il Sole) as an existential symbol of life and energy.

Storia Montana is an easy work which takes the audience on a scenic tour though the Austrian mountains. The journey begins on a dark drizzly morning, gradually reaching its musical climax with the final ascent to the summit. Creative special effects, conjuring up images of wind, rain, birds and cowbells, all help accentuate the realism of the work.

Via Claudia : An Imaginary Journey across the Alps

With Via Claudia, the band takes the audience with it on a tour of the Alps. The journey begins on a foggy night near Venice and leads in a solemn procession over steep mountain passes up to the summit, where the sun breaks through and aglorious panorama is revealed. Alpine meadows in full bloom, the echo of an alphorn and brilliant fanfares in the brass accompany the onward journey to Augsburg, where the arrival is celebrated with a triumphal anthem!

To set the darkness echoing

This intriguing composition, marked by its innovative sounds and haunting orchestration, is a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. The composer's intent was to capture the way Dr. King inspired profound change by leading us to see how we, not others, were behaving – and thus “set the darkness echoing,” according to the words of poet Seamus Heaney. This dramatic and thought-provoking piece will truly inspire.

To my Country

To My Country comes from the trio section of the Dutch composer Bernard Zweer (1854-1924) third symphony. The third symphony was composed at a time when many composers were inspired by great patriotic feelings, and Zweers compositions were said to have been an influence on Dvorak, Smetana, Sibelius and Grieg. The arrangement of this chorale was written for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands on May 5th 1995 and is dedicated ‘To My Country’.
