Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach (1759-1845), the grandson of Johann Sebastian Bach, was the last member of the musical dynasty to compose. He worked in London and Minden before moving to Berlin, where he worked as Kapellmeister to the Prussian Queen and music teacher to her and the royal children. His piano works, chamber music, orchestral works, oratorio, cantatas, arias, songs, and stage works are now described for the first time in a Catalogue of Works. With detailed music incipits, extensive descriptions of the sources, and information on editions and the history of the works, his output has been documented and information now made available to musicologists, musicians, and allthose interested in his music.

Rued Langgaard: Collected Songs Vol. 1-3

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. He has, however, only acquired this status many years after his death. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent, but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude. Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises 125 songs. Half of them were composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918, when the composer was in his early twenties. With this publication in three volumes, Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been published. The songs are set to German, Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for perform- ance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction, source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English. The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000, the aim being to present practical, performance-oriented publications of Langgaard's works on a critical scholarly basis. Supplement 8 of the New Liszt Edition contains first versions of Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos 12-21 and two shorter Liszt pieces with a Hungarian connection. All works in the volume appear here for the first time in a scholarly edition. This version of the Hungarian Rhapsodies ensued in 1846-50 from Magyar dallok (Hungarian Songs) Nos 1-11, published in Supplement 7. Piece No. 13 is based on the Rákóczi March, which Liszt set on several occasions. It had been a vital encore piece since his first concert in Hungary in 1839. Inclusion in this volume of the first version of the piece known as the Mosonyi Funeral March (a forerunner of the much later No. 7 in the Hungarian HistoricalPortraits) is especially notable as its autograph manuscript only emerged recently.
