With The Tempest, Thomas Adès composed one of the most striking and successful operas of recent years. From the turbulent orchestral prelude with which it begins to Ariel’s stratospheric yet ethereal ‘Five fathoms deep’ and the radiant quintet of reconciliation in its final act, its composer conjures up a wholly compelling musical world. Responding to librettist Meredith Oakes’ clear, unfussy refashioning of Shakespeare into formalised rhyme schemes, Adès has created a new kind of tonal language that is both direct and communicative but also indelibly contemporary.

Cello Concerto was composed by Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen in 2015. Written to Nicolas Altstaedt on commission from Århus Symfoniorkester and Die Duisburger Philharmonikerwith support from The Danish Arts FoundationFirst perfomance in Århus Sept 24, 2015. Programme note: This concerto contains a lot of technical and structural stuff that I have forgotten all about now. Without it though, the piece would have been a big mess of emotions, since it was written while my family and I were taking care of my mother as she was terminally ill. I recognize it having become a kind of rondo. The music wanted a place to return to, and perhaps it is due to the fact that my mother was always someone I could return to when everything else was exploding. In the end, the rondo dies and the musicgoes somewhere else, like all mothers.

Thomas Adès And Philip Hensher: Powder Her Face (Full Score)

Thomas Adès and Philip Hensher ’s dazzlingly precocious chamber opera Powder Her Face propelled its composer to international attention after its premiere in 1995 and, with nearly 300 worldwide performances, remains one of the most frequently performed British operas of the last two decades. Charting the glamorous rise and seedy fall of the notorious socialite beauty Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, the score is as witty, poignant and memorable as the ‘Dirty Duchess’ herself, paying homage to the popular idioms of cabaret and tango, as well as to Weill, Berg and Stravinsky. It is hard to believe that this masterpiece was written by a 24 year-old, but then that young man was Adès , whose prodigious musical talent was awe-inspiring even as a teenager.

Thomas Doss: Valentin's Chorale (Score/Parts)

This piece came about as a Christmas gift for Valentin, the composers’ youngest son. Valentin—more commonly Valentine in English—is also the patron saint of lovers. He is said to have been a poor priest who healed a blind girl, and gave flowers from his garden to those who sought help and comfort. Saint Valentine’s day has been celebrated in February each year since the 14th century as a day devoted to love. This work is written in the style of a chorale and has a light touch of romance!

Throughout his contrasting score, Thomas Doss has captured Count vonZeppelin's obsession and the subsequent realization of his dream of producing a flying cigar! The first movement describes how passionate Count von Zeppelin was about his idea and the vision that got hold of him. Towards the endof the movement the music swells to a pictorial image of the count, in which he sees the ship floating above himself. Dur: 8:05 (Grade 5)

In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksjö International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksjö Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

Berlin Memories : Irenenwalzer

This piece is a light-hearted waltz in the Viennese style, and waswritten in the 1970s by the composer’s father as a gift to his wife. Thomas Doss arranged the piece - originally written for piano - for wind band and in doing so created an orchestral work, which is suitable for the concert hall as well as for special occasions or celebrations.

Il Briccone

A wind music federation from Upper Austria commissioned Thomas Doss to compose Il Briccone, the Italian word for scoundrel. It is an elegant concert march which combines light ironic elements with virtuosity and exciting rhythms. Its alternation between chamber music-like passages with figures from solo instruments combined with surprising stylistic changes keeps everybody’s interest. This march is sure to be a great crowd pleaser.

The melancholic (Somewhere) Over the Rainbowx is unmistakably one of the most successful musical evergreens ever. The simplicity and unique beauty of this song formed the inspiration for numerous covers that have been created since its release. The beloved international pop star Beyoncé also gave it her own personal touch, and composer-arranger Thomas Doss based his jazzy version for concert band on her performance of the song.

A city celebrating a jubilee is always a very special occasion this is certainly the case for the fiftieth anniversary of the German city of Norderstedt. In light of this milestone, composer Thomas Doss has written a festivework which conveys pride, joyfulness, ideals and the thirst for action.
