Work for Solo Piano. The composer writes:'The Masque of the Red Death' was commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff. The title refers to the short story with the same title by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe?s story about the plague terrifying a masquerade party was only one inspiration for the music, and my piece is in no way programmatic - even despite the very fast staccato clouds, plague bells and medieval-dance fragment that can be heard.

Some believe it is the mad hallucinations of a drug addict (could be Poe himself), others see it as Poe´s equivalent of Dante´s INFERNO ? a tale from the Underworld.One thing is certain, though. DREAMLAND is a ?fantasy?, the vision of a dreamvoyager arriving at and staying in a mythical location beyond and between space and time, a place of strange majesty and surreal spectacles, such as: ?Mountains toppling evermore into seas without a shore?. At the same time it is a ?peaceful, soothing region? ? a mystical ?wonderland? not unlike the fabled Eldorado, whichis mentioned in the poem.Poe biographer Arthur Hobson Quinn called it ?one of Poe´s finest creations?,with each phrase contributing to one effect: a human traveler wandering betweenlife and death.DREAMLAND first appeared in print in America in the June 1844 issue of Graham´s Magazine, and was subsequently published in a June 1845 edition of The Broadway Journal.Poul Ruders, July 2010

Rachmaninov regarded his choral symphony The Bells Op.35 to be his greatest work, set to the poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The poem is a representation of life, from the nimbleness of youth to the pain of age, and this symphonyis divided into four movements, representing marriage, birth, terror, and death. The work is scored for Soprano, Tenor and Baritone soloists, with Choir and large Orchestra.The first movement, subtitled The SilverSleigh Bells, uses typically rich post-Romantic harmonies and is effervescent and joyous in mood, featuring a prominent Tenor part. The second, subtitled The Mellow Wedding Bells, features the soprano soloist,andconcentrates on the more passionate and intimate moments associated with weddings. The third movement, subtitled The Loud Alarum Bells, is a rousing and threatening Presto, representing terror with frightening anddemonic outbursts. The final movement, subtitled The Mournful Iron Bells, is gloomy, cold, and dispiriting. The Boswell Sisters inauspiciously launched their recording career in New Orleans, their hometown, on March 22, 1925, but their first release, I?m Gonna Cry and Nights When I?m Lonely didn?t shake any rafters. Early local appearances featured Connie, the eldest, on cello, Helvetia ("Vet") on violin, and Martha at the piano, but the city?s jazz environment made Connie and Vet switch to saxophone and banjo, respectively. At first, the singing was almost incidental, but it became their ticket to national attention five years later when they moved to New York and became a fixture on radio shows. The Boswell Sisters were notable for their tight harmony as well as their unique ability to modulate pitch and give familiar songs a new melodic twist. They were the cutting edge that inspired future groups, including The Andrews Sisters, who began their own career by emulating them, even down to their Southern accent.The exuberant sisters recorded a string of hits in the 1930s, sometimes teaming up with fellow vocalists, such as Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers. Instrumental accompaniments are by some of the day?s most popular musicians and bands, including The Dorsey Brothers, Don Redman, Red Nichols, and Benny Goodman. Considering their popularity and impact, the sisters had a relatively brief run, disbanding in 1936 when Martha and Vel married outside of the music industry and decided to give priority to family life.
