In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the “Shark Cage Fugue,”a classically inspired and sophisticated accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.

This version for strings was commissioned by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and first performed on 19th May 2012. This is the full score with the individual instrument parts, arranged for SSAA Chorus and Ensemble. Bryce Dessner is best known as the guitarist for The National, but he has also been acclaimed as a composer in his own right.

Although conceived as a whole school project, Earth, Sea and Sky works equally as well as a song book to dip in and out of.The songs are written with a sensitivity for the range and skills of the age group they are designed for and any part writing is optional, allowing even less confident choirs to get involved and get singing. A Wilderness of Sea

Alex Freeman's A Wilderness of Sea (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB) draws from four of Shakespeare’s most famous works. It emphasizes a common thread among those works that addresses two of the most universal aspects of human existence: water and impermanence. The recording of the work by Helsinki Chamber Choir conducted by Nils Schweckendick is published by the label BIS - follow the link to listen to it. Duration: c. 15' Alex Freeman (b. 1972) grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. Around the age of 13 he became interested in composing. In 1998 he moved to New York to begin his Doctoral studies at the Juilliard School, studying with Christopher Rouse. The focus of his doctoral document led him to Finland. The recipient of a Fulbright Full Fellowship, he moved to Helsinki in 2001 to research Sibelius's sketches and study composition with Eero Hämeenniemi at the Sibelius Academy. Dr. Freeman is currently composing full-time and lives with his wife and children in Finland.

Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars.
