Up in the Sky : The Story of Balloons

One of man’s great dreams has always been to fly high through the air like a bird, free as a bird. There are ancient Greek legends such of those of Daedalus and Icarus, and indeed as early as the 9th century attempts at flight are reputed to have taken place in Arabia. It wasn’t until 1783, however, that the invention of hot air ballooning by the Montgolfier brothers in France propelled man through the air for the first time. This colourful work depicts every step of this adventurous ballooning story.

Nyx

Nyx was the goddess of the night - one of the most ancient goddesses, respected even by Zeus. This piece depicts the role she played in the creation of the world, the generation of life and the formation of the four essential elements - fire, water, air and earth.

Ponte Romano

This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time.

Fiori : for Flute and Concert Band

Fiori finds its genesis in a walk through an impressionistic garden. It expresses not only the atmosphere and mood but also tiny and grotesque scenes between the insects. The flute, as a solo instrument, plays a perfect role in this marvellous micro world. It was a challenge for the composer to integrate the sound of the flute through the “fragrance of flowers and exotic plants that fills the air”.

The Mission Theme (from NBC News)

Commissioned by the NBC News Division for their Nightly News featuring Tom Brokaw, this signature theme has become one of the most often heard melodies on the air waves. Remembering the tapping of Morse code signals andalso the clatter of the old ticker tape machines, Mr. Williams starts the music with references to these pre-Internet means of news delivery while providing a rhythmic pulse for the powerful main theme.

The Golden Age of the Xylophone

Premiered by Randy Eyles and The United States Air Force Band, this ragtime novelty xylophone solo with band accompaniment has been performed around the world. In 1987 it was performed during a live radio broadcast in China to anestimated audience of 60 million! Golden Age is a medley of eight tunes that were favorites of the 1900's. A true “Show Stopper,” The Golden Age of the Xylophone is sure to become a popular favorite with bands aroundthe world. Standard instrumentation, medium (band), difficult (solo).

Alpine Flowers' Party!

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.
