Refraction

Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.

Brasserie : for Brass Quintet & Orchestra

The commission of the Pentaphonia Brass Quintet and the Haize Berriak Sakanako Musika Ekartea Concert Band from the Spanish Basque country was to write a piece for brass quintet and concert band. The work was conceived by Otto M Schwarz as a piece that moves through different styles in a manner similar to his concerto grosso. Thematic material is introduced by the quintet and then taken over by the band, and vice versa. Furthermore, the quintet doesn’t always play together, but rather often as a trio or just a duet. Virtuoso solo passages complete the work. Brasserie is one of the very few works of its type and is sure to find a permanent place is the symphonic wind music repertoire.

Light, sun, moon, stars: there has always been a connection to faith, the occult and mysticism. Different constellations were supposed to predict the future, and some phenomena have been interpreted as punishment by different Gods. From sunrises and solar eclipses, through rainbows, the scattering of light, sunset in the daytime, moonrises, the northern lights, the new moon, crescent moons and stellar constellations, to shooting stars… our observations encompass all this and much more. The Mystery of Light is the first of a series of pieces with the same theme. ‘NIGHTLIGHTS’ deals with lights of the night: created partly by nature and partly by man himself and consists ofthree movements: Opener and Star Shower, Lunar Eclipse and Aurora and Fireworks.

Mitt hjerte alltid vanker - Fantasi : Fantasy on My Heart remains in Wonder

This arrangement was commissioned by B3 (The Bergen Woodwind Ensemble). B3 is a large woodwind ensemble located in Bergen with a mix of professional and amateur players. My Heart Remains in Wonder is a well-known Christmas hymn in Scandinavia. I wanted my version to be different to the traditional hymn tune style in which it is normally performed. One day I was outside walking and this idea came to me: an ostinato-like, mechanical skeleton of arpeggio semiquavers on which I could 'hang' the melody. However, I also wanted to do the melody line a bit different. The inspiration for this comes from folk music and the way fiddlers hardly ever lift their bow off the strings when they play. Because of this, it is important that the melody is played in a very sostenuto style in this arrangement. The harmonies lie somewhere between jazz and folk music with a little nod towards Grieg (himself heavily influenced by folk music) in the slow middle section.

Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), André Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. The first movement is a bustling toccata and the second movement is lyrical and improvisatory in nature. This overture recounts the magical re-awakening of Spring’s arrival in Sweden with the help of two Swedish folk songs. A melancholic, haunting song is first heard from afar as various instruments from different locations in the concert hall echo the solitary female voice. A soulful melody gradually transforms to a polka-like variant that gradually builds into the joyful main theme. The score contains valuable notes from the composer on how various effects and placement of musicians throughout the space can enhance Spring’s performance.

Bulgarian folk music has a long tradition and numerous typical characteristics, such as particular dissonances and complex, irregular rhythms. In Bulgarian Dances (Part II) (which can be performed together with the previously published title Bulgarian Dances) Franco Cesarini has preserved the original spirit of Bulgarian folk music, yet has imbued it with a symphonic character and brought it into the concert hall. The three different movements give us a meditative, moving folksong and a lively dance, before a distinctly symphonic part leads to a glittering finale.

Today, Voestalpine is a company specialising in technology and industrial goods. Founded nearly 150 years ago, it has played an important role in the steel and iron industry throughout its history. The company displays an impressive “Contemporary History Exhibition 1938-1945” commemorating the victims of National Socialist forced labour in the factory during WWII. ‘Iron Ring’ refers to the company logo during that time. This work is a symphonic poem-like composition, describing different aspects of the companies’ history in four musical scenes. It is a dramatic, breathtaking and impressive piece of music that will leave no one untouched. The piece features severalimpressive solos for a cello. The latin title «Sollicitus» means upset or uneasy is important in terms of the character and form of the work. This work contains several different pcarts, all of them based around a fanfare-like theme which is presented several times. This theme change it’s character, form, tonality, rhytmic and tension throughout the piece which triggers the turbulence of the music. «Sollicitus» is a commission for Midtun Skoles Musikkorps and their conductor Christian Breistein for their participation in the Norwegian Championships for School Bands in 2017. The version for Brass Band was written to Laksevåg Musikkforening for their participation at the Norwegian Brass Band Championships 2018.

Mass in D minor : D minor - WAB 26

Anton Bruckner composed his first mass, the Mass in D minor, in 1864 in just four months. It was not ready in time for the Kaiser Franz Joseph Is birthday, as planned, but was first performed on 20 November at the Feast of St Cecilia in Linz Cathedral with great success. The mass is one of the first works by Bruckner to be written in his characteristic symphonic style. It was revised several times and first published in 1892. This edition is based on a critical evaluation of all the relevant sources, and offers an improved musical text.
